CHESS COLUMN O? THE lILLADELPIIIA EVENING B 1 FRIDAY, November 23, 1866. All communications for this column must be directed "Chess Editor of EVENING Thmiarrug," and should reach the office, at 'latest, on Thursday morning. All Problems lutist be accompanied by the solution and name of the composer. Answers to Correspondents. " SWINDLE O'GIBBET."—Our last ' week's problem is one of the best of its kind. Mr. F—'s version of the same idea is as fol- WHITE. " STITDENT."—The remark of George Wal ker's, that, " after the Rook, Chess ceases," means, that if any player who cannot de fend himself at the odds of the Rook cannot really be called a Chess player. Out of every thousand people who play the game, per haps not more than a, dozen overcome the Rook, and certainly not over two or three the odds of a Knight ; and a player who re ceives but the pawn and two moves, may already be considered really a fine player. Philidor, at one time, received the Rook , from his preceptor, Legalle, and the immor tal :La Bonrdonnais, for some time, actu ally received the odds of a Queen from Har ry Wilson, and afterwards for a long time received the pawn and two moves from his countryman, Deschanpelles. "N. W. 4 BALTIMOBE,"—The highest cir culation ever attained by any Chess maga zine, was by the Schachzeitung, in 1851, when it had 800 subscribers. We do not think that the Chess Monthly ever had. more than 500 subscribers, so that from this you can easily gather that a Chess Column in a well-known paper has from fifty to a hun dred' times as many readers as any Chess periodical. "J. Lowuarritem."—The book of the Con gress of 1862, which you obligingly sent us at that time, came safely to hand. [From the Chess Player's Magazine.] End•Glalme No. 47. BY MR. HORWITZ.
