The Storm atthe Bahamas. • Consul Kilpatrick, in a sletter dated Nas sau, N. P., Nov. 3, states that on the day after his despatch was forwarded to the De partment of. State, there arrived the crews of two other wrecked - A.merican vessels, the officers and crews being saved,,with a very small portion of their cargoes, viz: The brig California, of Bristol, Rhode Island, J. D Ingraham, master, wrecked at Little 13-tha mas, October 2d, on a voyage from Newport, Rhode Island, to Havana, with a geuera, cargo; and the schooher 'William A. Ellis. of New York, Elliot J. Bishop, Master, wrecked at Great Abaco, October 21, on a voyage from New York to St. Marks, Flo rida. Commander Carter, of the United States ship Winooski, infOrmed the Consul that the keeper of the light-house at the Hole in the Wall told him that a vessel; or fragMents o' orie brollerr up, was found a few miles from where the Winooski lay, loaded with machi nery for a saw mill, dry goods, ttc., and that he took her to be American, from the fact or having found two pieces of bunting, a small part of the union, and a part of the stripes on the broken add rugged parts of the rock. The shipping mark on one piece of the ma chinery was "H. F. D." Tile vessel was wrecked in the late hurricane of October, and no doubt all hands on board perished, as five bodies were found on the beach. Release of Thirty-nine rentans. Toitowmo ' Nov. 19.—0 n Saturday night, thirty-nine Fenian prisoners were released from custody. Their discharge was con ducted with the greatest secrecy. Only about an hour's notice was given them be fore they were sent away. They were fur nished with transportation by the Govern went to the Suspension Bridge, and a special train was furnished by the. Great Western Railroad. This drew up in rear of the jiaii at ten o'clock, and the men were safely lodged on board, in charge of a guard of twenty men. The prisoners received a good supper at the railroad station before starting, and each was presented with a five dollar greenback.. On, reaching-the Falls the Pe ntane bade good-bye to their escoft, giving three hearty cheers for the Sheriff, the Gu vernor of the jail, and the jail officers. Distress Among the Cretans. The 'United States Consul at Corea writes, October 14th, to the Secretary of State as fol lows: "I hope that our government will be able in some way to contribute to the relief of the unfortunates who are already de prived. of all provision made against the winter, and even in many cases of any means of obtaining a living, by the indiscriminate and barbarous severity of the Government, and who destroy not only stores of pro visions, but even the houses and imple ments, and in many cases the vineyards of those whose only offence has been to escape at the approach of, a soldiery, of wnose nu nianity they have good reasons to doubt. If the charity of the friends of humanity is not large towards the Cretans thousands must perish during the coming. winter." Impartial , Sagslige llietAing at_ Wash, United States Senator Harlan last night addressed a public meeting at the `Pair building, Pennsylvania avenue, in was ington. His auditors were abbut equally divided between the whites and blacks. His theme was the moral, political, and so cial necessity of conferring suffrage on citi zens of African - descent throughout the country. He read from speeches and state-' ments to show that the Prealdent of the United States himself was in favor of it. He expressed the belief that if "those who were present would petition Congress for impar tial suffrage there would be no difficulty in , : the passage of a law for that purpose. Other sptutkers addressed the meeting. T,IZE BTAGB "OLD MAN." —What a tough chap the stage "old man" must be ! We saw hi :n the other night at one of our thea tres, and he looked just as he did when we were a boy (we wouldn't like to state pre cisely how long ago that was) and saw him for the last time. What wonderful material for wear his clothes must be made of, for he appears in the same snit that we first saw him in—that is,he appears to—and they look precisely as they-did then. His voice has some shakes in it, but no more than it had then; and he ( totters in his gait—yet he always tottered. He is just as fiery tempered and passionate as ever, and continues to alarm us lest he may go off with apoplexy in some of his fits of passion, he gets so red in the face. At such times we have observed that he usually forgets to totter, but stamps across the stage with the vigor of youth almost. He continues to call people .whom he is angry with: "You infernal scoundrel, sail! "Never met with such a rascal, sail, in the whole course of my life, sail !" In his playful moods he digs his cane into a favorite nephew's ribs and says, "Ail, ye young dog, ye! Ha! ha! ha!" An industrious, hard-working fellow is theatage "old man." He appears at least once every night, and' sometimes twice. It seems as though he never would wear out, any more than his clothes. It is very rarely that he dies, either living to wreak horrid vengeance upon some one—usually a young man of prepossessing appearance, who hadn't done quite the fair thing by the old woman's .daughter—or to evoke a blessing upon a'deeply suffering, but happily unites pair as the, curtain drops, having previonsly hugged the "old woman" of the play, and executed a fragment of a hornpipe. He has his faults, of course, but there is generally an undercurrent of goodness beneath the crusty surface of the stage "old man," and • he is generally a favorite with the audience. Times._ SHAD AND SALMON IN NEW ENGLAND RrvEns.—lt is well known that the number of shad and salmon in the New England rivsis, and especially in the Connecticut, is vastly smaller than it was thirty years ago. It is equally well known that this decrease in the number of fish has been nausea by the increase in the number of dams. The legislatures of Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut have ap pointed commissioners to report a remedy. Their proposal is very simple—to propa gate fish in the upper waters by .artificial means, and, by building fish-ways, to enable them to pass freely to and from the ocean. Massachusetts has already finished one fish-way on the Merrimack, has com menced another, and has authorized two others on. the Connecticut, on condition that Connecticut will build one at Enfield Falls and prohibit the use of the gill-net. These fish-ways cost about $5,000 each. The commissioners of New Hampshire have an agent at the present time in New Bruns wick, engaged In procuring salmon-spawn. There is no doubt that the Connecticut and the lesser rivers will be soon restocked with these delicious fish. THE CHOLERA IN TTALY.—The _lgnited States Consul at Palermo says that the cholera at that city has become epidemic. From the time the troops landed, ,Septem• ber 18th, to October 17th, it was only in a sporadic form. The Consul learned that on the 19th, which in the official bulletin is marked 217 cases and 131 deaths, there were actually buried in the Campo Santo 300 bodies. There were several American vessels in port, but, with the exception of the mate of the Cal3o, the health of the offi-' cers and crews was excellent. ArPormumrrs.--The President yester day aPpointed D. M. Leatherman, of Ten newes, Commissioner on the part of the United States to the Universal Exposition, to be held in Paris in 1867. Richard Beahan, Deputy Posttnaster at Ann Arbor,' Michigan. Colonel William G. Moore, one of the President's private secretaries, has been appointed a Paymaster in the regular array. • From the Pacific. SAN FRAlielSoO, Nov. 19. The bark Smyrniote brings Honolulu advioes of No vember 2d. queen Emma arrived at Roam :ulu on the steamer Vanderbilt,October 22d, after a passage of nine days from this port. She was gteeted with a royal salute, to which the Vanderbilt and the Prussian war Vannetta, responded. Thousands of people. assembled to greet her on landing. The Vanderbilt drew twenty feet of water, but entered the harbor of Honolulu with. out difficulty. The great gale at Hong Kong was se• riously, felt at sea, and many vessels are missing. , Advises from Tahiti report the loss of the iron ship Bellesama, on a reef near Palmer ston Island, about the 26th of March. All hands perished. Arrived, ship Dragon, Capt. McOlernon, from London. The steamer Golden Age sailed to-day for 'Panama, with $783,000 in treasure, of which 6760,000 goes to New York. Among her passengers is General - Rufus Ingalls, U. S. Army. Victoria advices say that the question of annexation to the United States is under discussion. The Victoria Telegraph news paper says England gives no assistance and saddles us with a,cumbrous form of govern ment against our wishes. The h'ederal , authorities spend hundreds of, thousands of dollars every year on their Territories, and, ask the inhabitants to pay but a tithe of the outlayin consequence of its infan9y. Every British colony is devoted to chronic discontent, culminating often in armed, outbreaks, while in the United States Tdrritories scarcely aremonstrance is heard. Our country, is. killed; by, the, extravagant men'at the head of affairs, while the other steadily progresses under the management of the people. This is so apparent that they are now being applied by many to these valuable mri. sical instruments. Dr. Valentine Mott, previous to hie death, pronounced the Glass Castor Wheels an in valuable invention for bedfast invalid', who are guarded against the damp floors after undergoing the Process of cleaning, Or where dampness is produced from any other cause. Aside from this. Housekeepers are relieved from the dread of having their carpets cut or torn, as frequently happens from those now in me, often caused by a rust, which adheres with gluelike tenacity. No such annoyance can possibly proceed from the Glass Ceator Wheels, aa we all know that glare is noncorrosive. There are no rough or =lin bled edges to the Glass.WheeLs, such as we often find in those of iron, and the latter, though smoothly fia bthed, will soon rust, from the dampness of the at:mos phare, if nothing else, producing roughness on theses nice, or edge, while the former will always maintain the smoothness of glass, just as they are finished. Byaleeping upon glees wheels you retain all the eleo trinity yen had in your body on retiring, and yon get ap In the morning feeling as fresh and active as a young man.
