SECOND EDITION. BY TELEGRAPH. LATE FROM. WASHINGTON, THE BRITISH MINISTER'S LETTER. UNFAVORABLE TO THE FENIANS. GEN. DIX'S MISSION. OENKEtia GBLU'S MOVEMENTS: LATEST FROM CANADA. From Washington. IBpecial Despatch to the Bulletin.] WASHINGTON, Nov. 17.—There is no foun dation for the statement that Chief Justice Chase is in conference with the President in regard to the question of amnesty and quali fied suffrage. The President has full au thority to issue the former if he chooses to exercise it, and has always favored the Ist tor as is shown in his letter to Gov. Sharkey, of Mississippi. The President's organ has another attack today on the Constitutional Amendment. These articles are by authority. The British Minister's letter to Seward, stating the action that had been taken in regard to the Fenians now under sentence of death, is looked upon as an unfavorable indication. The British Ministry have always favored most extreme measures in dealing with the Fenians. General Dix is here in conference with the President and Secretary Seward. They are anxious that he should leave at an early day for his post. Gen. Grant at Baltimore. BALTIMORE, Nov. 17.—Gen. Grant arrived here this morning, and took breakfast with William J. [From the Cincinnati Timm] The city of Chicago is a place of immense size. The State of Illinois is in Chicago, but it would hardly be noticed there, unless you were looking for it particularly. Al though Lake Michigan is a pretty big lake, yet, owing to the stupendous dimensions of the city, it barely serves the Chicagoans the purposes of a bathing-tub. They are run ning a tunnel under it to bring water from Lake Huron; for drinking purposes. Every thing is on a big scale there—some of their biggest merchants are "scaly." ' The Tre mont House is the biggest hotel in the world. The Sherman House is also the biggest hotel in the world. There are several other hotels there that are the biggest in the world. New York and Philadelphia regret ex ceedingly that they are so far from Chicago. It interferes materially with their growth and future prospects. They are endeavoring to have lightning trains run through from Chicago, without stopping, so that they can have the Chicago papers at the earliest pos sible moment. The Chicago papers are the moat enterprising papers in the world. In order to get ahead of all others, the morning papers are published the night before, and the evening papers are got out before break fast. This gives them an immense advan tage. • They had a great Driving Park at Chi cago, which did a driving business—ilrove the life out of a man the other day. He was a driver, guilty of the heinous crime of driving the fastest horse. As he was about to drive ahead on the final heat, some one let a fence board drive at his head, which settled him. It settled the Driving Park also. People found fault with the board, and wouldn't patronize it. Chicago is a great place for elevators. There is more corn elevated in Chicago than in any other city. It is more in the juice than in the kernal, however. The princi pal business of the city consists in getting up "Gift Enterprises ." They get them up and then "git, with all the money. An enterprising citizen of Ohicago, named Crosby, devotes his time and money to building immense and costly Opera Houses to be "raffled" for. He is ready to fill any orders for Opera Houses that may be sent in from neighboring cities. Country orders attended to with promptness and despatch. He keeps a stock of Opera Hons'es on hand, constantly, from the one-cylinder Opera House to run by hand, to the thousand horse power Opera House to run by every thing. To show the demand there is for his Opera Houses, he finished a first-class one recently, and there are thousands of people waiting to get it! Chicago, is a very windy town, , There is probably more blow about that place than any other in the world. In comparison to its "blows" the dreaded Simoom is only &moonshine. The elements are combined to form a monster ear trumpet, the little end of which is inserted into the public ear, and through it all Chicago blowsthe praises of that wonderful city, until it makes the public's head acheactually "splitting the ears of the groundlings." . The people up there are surprised and indignant that the shore end of the Atlantis Cable is not fastened in Chicago, and think steamers for. California. Europe, &c., would do better to sail from there. Great town. • AN AUCTIoNEBR's STORY.—The Boston Commercial Bulletin tells a story of Leon ard, the book auctioneer. Some twenty years after his school-boy days in pEngland, be was selling a lot of second-hand books in Boston at his salesroom, by auction. Among others was a little old-fashioned grammar thatcaught his eye which seemed to wear a familiar aspect. .He opened it, and lot in side the cover was his own youthful auto graph and other hieroglyphics, inscribed by himself nearly a quarter of a century be fore. By some curious coincidence the lit tle book, lost in boyhood's day, had during that length of time, like its owner, crossed the Atlantic, and in the course of events, come back to his very hand. It is almost unnecessary to add that the little volume, of only waste-paper worth to the public, was of greater value to the auctioneer than, many more costly works; that it was bid in by bim as a relic, and rescued from the pa per-mill. iLrli f 1 SALES OF STOOKS, BEFORE BpAILDS. 500 eh Read B 510 5831100 eh Beading B 200 eh do 58% um eh do 100 eh do 06 44-100 100 911 do .
