HoranAv FEsTivams.--Measnres have
been taken by persons connected with the
various churches and benevolent associa

that all the moneys raised at the contem
plated fairs shall be given to the Managers
of the "Home for Friendless_Children," in
order to enable them to facilitate the erec
tion of their uew buildingat Fifth and Plain
streets; which they design soon to com
mence. This is a measure which - should
elicit favorable consideration.

DICAIdAT.T..O —At the Academy of Music last evening
Herr Dawison appeared in his great character of Shy
lock. in the German translation of "The Merchant of
Venice" We saw a portion of the performance and
feel confident that the ability of Herr Dawison is fully
up to his reputation. The company from the Stadt
Theatre in New York is an excellent one. We were
especially pleased with Herr Beiffarth as Launcelot
Gobbo. Portia, Melissa, Jessica, Bassani°, Antonio
and Balthazar were all effectively performed We de
not quite comprehend the system of springing so
many bells at the clime of each act, as the prompter or
staee manager did last evening. It rather interfered
with the harmony of the entertainment. To-night
