governor Newell Not - Elected,
The Missouri. Election.
Sz. Duns. Nov.'7.—Nearly domplete re

In the First Congressional District the of-
Adel return gives Gen. Pile (Rep.) 208 ma
jority over Hogan (Derr.)
The returns from the interior are still
meagre, but enough , has been received to
show that C. A. Newcombe (Rep.) 12as been
elected in the Second Congressional District
by 'about 3,500 majority.
In the Third District the returns favor the
re-ekction of Noell (Conservative); in the
Fourth. J. J. Gravelly (Rep.), will probably
have 3,000 majority. J.W. McClurg (Ren.),
is re-elected from the Fifth District.
The Sixth District -is doubtful, but it .is
thotteht that R. T. Vanhorn. (Rep.) is re
elected.
General B. F. Loan (Rep.) is re-elected in
the Seventh , District, by a large majority.
There are not enough returns from the
Eighth District to indicate the result.
In the Ninth District W. F. Swetzler
(Dem.) is probably elected.
In this city Frank Blair's majority for the
Legislature has been reduced to 6, and his
seat will be contested by Ur. Branscomb,
11113 litgpublican competitor.
New Jersey.
We understand that Hon. Wm. A. Newell
(Rep.), candidate for Congress in the Second
District, has been defeated by 500 majority,
by Mr. Haight, the Democratic candidate.

while there area` score of billiard saloont ,
and upwards of a hundred coffee houses. in
Charleston, there is not one 'theatre. It
adds that when Mark Btrakosch passes

SAvsakt - S - AR.—The Savannah News and.
Herald congratulates the people of that city
on the disappearance of pestilential disease,
and says that the business of the city in
creases steadily with the season : and, not
withstanding some stringency in financial
operations, the best feeling pervades the
business community. Merchants have their
stores well stocked with goods of every de
sirable description.
DANGEROUS GRASSROPPERS.—The Chi
cago Tribune says that several valuable
horses have-died - mysteriously in Loons
toWnship, Illinois. The 'mortality is re
ported to have been caused by the grass
hoppers, which, being taken into the
mouth, bite the tongues of tfie animals and
make them so sore that they will not eat,
and starve tor.death. The cases have oc
curred among horses turned out to grass.
A Nuw FEATURE.--AR lowa paper says
that the exhibition of peat seems destined
hereafter to forth a prominent feature in the
fairs of that State.. A specimen was burned
last week at the Cerro Gordo county fair,
which, though not pronounced first-rate.
fully justified the general opinion that we
have an abundant supply of this fuel, lack

There was rather more demand ibr money on the
street this morning, but it was freelymet, and the rates
are unchanged. The fact that the New York Banks
permit twenty-five millions of dollars, in legal tender
notes, which have ceased to bear interest, to remain to
their credit in the Sub Treasury, would seem to be
conclusive evidence that the market will remain easy
for a long time to come. Trade, however, Is remarks
