BORED.--A member of the Vancouver's Island Legis' lature,lSlCOlure by name, spoke on a recent, occasion for seventeen consecu five hours, to defeat an obnoxious bill, and carried his point; only yielding the floor for motions to adjourn. Probably his auditors became so hungry and sleepy that they voted on the principle of yielding to any thing far a quiet life. English Anthers and Lake Scenery. A correspondent of the Utica Herald, thus speaks of English lake scenery, and of noted writers wbo made theiri habitation among them The scenery in the - lake district' is the most lovely of any I have seen in Eng , land. It is not so grand as that, among, the Alps, in Switzerland, but it has a charm about it that is really enchanting - I went by train from Liverpool to Win. dermere, and from there by private con veyance to Ambleside, Rydal, Gras mar, Thirlamere and Keswick. The weather. was beautiful, and we got splendid views' of Helvellyn, Saddleback, Skiddaw and the other mountains. 'Miss Martineau resides at Ambleside. Rydal was the home of Wordsworth. Near Gras mere is the cottage of Hartley Cole.' ridge, and at Keswick that of Southey and the elder Coleridge,'" Words worth lies • in the, churchyard of Grasmere, with nothing but - a, - plain,: dark-colored slab to mark the spot. Near by Is the grave of poor Hartley Coleridge,' himself apoet and the son of a great poet. SoutheY's monument in the. churchyard at Keswick, and beneath .which he-Is buried, is an elaborate piece' 'of sculpture. The house of Wordsworthl is within two miles of Ambleside; that , of Dr. Arnold, the famous -teacher of Rugby, is even at a less distance; and' none had a better appreciation of the gloriousscenes in which their feet were; set than they. Miss Martineau still re sides; at her charming residence, "The Knoll," at that end of the straggling' town which stretches toward Rydal.! She is the only person of established , literary reputation, - of all the' great array of splendid names; that once made the district famone,: who at present resides in it; although at one time or another, the place has been probably visited and sojourned in by, almost every notable person in the land. At Grasmere, an :humble white cottage is pointed out, where Wordsworth lived, just after his marriage, for several years; where De Quincey resided after him, and wrote his English "Opium Eater:" where Coleridge and Southey and Lamb and Charles Lloyd, must have all been visitors at one time or another. The scenery about Grasmere is indeed charm ing—the wooded valley and village of Grasmere, the western hills rising range after range, the beautiful curve of Dun mail Raise, and the winding of the now and then seen Rothay, form a picture of such different elements of beauty as almost seems artificial and unnatural from the Very variety of its charms. - $705 00 9,100 00 - 1,950 00 - 26,000 00 IMPOBTATIONS.
