Wri BULLETIfI.
Destructive Fire in tlie Rleventfi W«r<l,
Last nltht, about eleven o’clock, the Penn 6oan
Works, on Wood street, below Third, were discovered
to De cn lire. The dames llrat appeared about the ceil'
treef the building, and spread rapidly through the
upper part. The structure was a three story brick,
about seventy five feet In depth. The opperatorles
were entirely burned out, and the stock on the first
floor was deluged with water, and greatly Injured.
The flames extended to the spice mills of Gugeenaelm
& Dreitoss, adjoining on the west. This establishment
was also of brick, three stories in height and, with
tne toap works, formed a continuous building, with a
front of about one hundred feet on Wood street, The
Are gaiced.raptd headway ln|he spice mills, and the
whole concern was soon burned out. Very little of
the extensive stock of spices and essences of coffee was
saved j
The Humane Hose House, on Wood street, west of
the sj.loo mills, a large brick structure with an Impos
log cupola, was In great danger, and was on fire
several times. At one time the cupola caught fire, and
owing to the great smoke which enveloped the build
-Ist ihe dames were extinguished w th great difficulty,
the firemen being drives, almost blinded by the smoke,
firom their positions.
Baker’s conrt, the entrance to which is on St. John
street, suffered greatly. A number of the small houses
in the court took fire, and the goods in them were re
moved with much difficulty. Among the sufferers by
the fire Id the court were three German famlles named
HiUßtein, Haas and Miller. -
The flumes were cot under about one e’clock without
spreading beyond th a buildings mentioned, although a
number o! large wholesale houses lutbe vicinity or the
fire were in great danger when the fire was at its
height. • .
A noise resembling an explosion caused a temporary
panic while the fire was raging, and several persons
were muiscd by being knocked down and trampled
upon by the crowd In the general rush which ensued
The real estate destroyed belongad to John Ban
croft. and_waa formerly known as Bancroft's soap
Works. There wire three brick buildings fronting on
Wood street, land a large building in the rear, Mir.
Bar crolt valued the buildings at 130.000. There Is an
Insurance 0f19,000 In the Fire Association, which will
probably coverthe loss. One of the front bnlldlngi is
'ln good condition, and the back buildings were not
much iDjured.
Gnggenhelmer &; Drelfosi occupied the two weetern
buildings and the back building. They had a heavy
stock on hand, and all, including, fixtures, apparatus,
machinery, <tc. were destroyed. The losslsestimated
at 125,000. The insurance is 110,M0. .
The Penn Soap Works;- formerly Heisler’s, now
owned bv Calm & Co. Bo* estimated at 125,000, and
there la believed to be but little insurance.
The Humane Hose House is insured in the Fire As
sociation,-
The large sugar house opposite was saved by iron
shutters. - i :
The surrounding property was saved through the
great exertions of the firemen.
During the fire the front wall of the centre building
fell out pnd several firemen made narrow escapes.
Two were knocked from a ladder but were not seri
ously iDjured.
