The Storm at Washington and Baltimore.
“Washington. Oct. 11.—Professor Henry,
of the Smitfasonianlnstitute, sayathat the,
amount of rain; which fell from yesterday
morning, at 9 A. M., fo this ' morning at the;
same hour, was somewhat-more than five
inches, being the greatest quantity that has
fallen ; within a similar period for a long
time. Considerable damage to property is
reported along the line of the upper Potomac
and- the Chesapeake and Ohio canal, as
well as in this city and Georgetown. The
• storm has continued since yesterday with
hut brief intermissions.*-
.. Baltimore,, Oct. 11th.—The storm has
caused heavy floods in alt the streams. and
and considerable damage and loss of life.
A number of bridges and mill-dams have
been carried away. The bridges on the
Franklin and Frederick turnpikes are gone;
Several houses have been, swept away. A
famitydf six-persons, andahother of three

The bodies of the unfortunate - family who
Were drowned in the flood on G wynn’s
. Falls, one mile from this city, by their house
being swept away, have all been found ex
cept. ;the mother and one Child. ' Three of
the children were found nearly together at
the foot of Ridley street. The body of the

Baltimore, Oct 11.—The rain has con
tinued to-day without intermission, and is
still falling, with a heavy easterly wind".
-All accounts agree that the quantity of water

dinary. A number of dams and bridges on
lhe Patapsco have been destroyed.' The ex
tensive dam at Elysville was swept off, and
-oomiDg against the turnpike bridge at Eili
cott’s Mills, destroyed it. The wrecks finally
accumulated} at the heavy stone bridge at
Illchester, on the Baltimore and Ohio Kail
ioad, thraeen miles from Baltimore, which
gave way before the- tremendous volume of
water. This bridge was considered the
strongest on the road, and had snccessfnlly
resisted all former floods. All the other
bridges on the road are safe. A large force
-of workmen have commenced the repairs,
-and the trains will be running as usual in
the coarse of to-morrow. '

Horrible Indian Outrages Discovered.-"
' : Bansom of the Surviving Victims.
St. Louis, Oct. 11.—CaDtain Barlow, of
General Sherman’s staff, arrived here yes
terday from Fort Dodge, where he saw two
white girls, named Doye, one seventeen and
the other thirteen years old, who had been
ransomed from the Kiowa Indians. The
girls say that on the 27th of August the Ki
owas attacked their home in Northwestern
•Texas, killed, scalped and burned their
father; themselves and mother, and sister,
•eight years old, were carried into captivity
and treated in the crnelest and most revolt
ing manner. On arriving at the Indian
camp, the captives wereknocked about with
clnbs, and brutally abused. On hearing
their condition, the commanding officer at
Fort Dodge, not having sufficient force to
rescue them, effected their ransom, and will
send them to their friends in Texas as soon
as they recover from their terrible suffer
ings. While in the Indian camp, the officer
sent to arrange their ransom saw the cap
tives knocked down three times and vio
lated.'
General Sherman arrived home on the
16th.

A Hundred Babies in a Stable.— An
LBglish paper says: “An old stable with
;One hundred little babes nestling in the
-horse-troughs, is something of, a novelty
but the spectacle is daily to be seen in the
locality of Union street, Borough road,
London. The work haslbeen somewhat re

an old stable to form a nursery,, and fitted it
upfor taking care of the babes of women
obliged to go to char or work' away from

An House.— The Pall Malt Gazette
•says: There are not many noblemen in
'uiese days of banking and manufacturing
c 2?, themselves down as
thirty-third of their title. Themarriage ad
vertisements lately set forth the fact that
‘John Erancis Erskine, Thirty-third Earl
