A Btjbglab’s Revenge.— A servant girl
at Fall River, Massachusetts, saw a burglar
at one o’clock, Thursday morning, entering
the wifidOw-’of her chamber in. the attic.
She immediately arose in bed, when he
sprang toward her and threatened to blow
her brains out if she made-any noie. He
then seized her, placed , his hand over her
mouth, and inflicted several cuts: on her
breast and neck, with somd sharp instru
ment, declaring that he wonld have his re’
venge this time, as she had disappointed
him twice. In the scuffle which ensued the
other servants, with the members of the
family, were aronsed and rushed to her
■chamber, but the scoundrel made his es
cape by the window. The girl was found
to have received three severe cuts across
the breast, and a slight one under the chin.
In her struggle with the ruffian she pulled
"the bed clothes up around her breast and
neck, which probably prevented the wounds
from being more serious. No reason for
-the assault can be assigned except that the
girl had’ given the alarm on the previous
visits of the villain to the premises.
Opium. —lt has been discovered that the
poppy is indigenous to a large part of Arl
-zona. According to the report of Major
Duffield, United States Marshal in Arizona,
this plant is also found growing in its natu
ral wild state in the valley of the Santa
•Cruz river. The production of opium opens
-up -a valuable source of wealth. Mr.
Emanuel Weiss, of . Pennsylvania, who has
paidmuoh attention to the matter, says:
: “Two families, with but. two able field
hands, dan put ten acres of land under caU
tivation, which will yield about 1,300 pounds
-of merchantable opium, containing nearly
ten per cent, of morphine.” This will-make
one of the most profitable crops raised.
The 'poppy matures in 'one hundred days.
It is strange how long a fact of this charac
ter isknown before some enterprising man
turns,it to account. It has been known for
forty years that the piny woodland of
middle New Jersey will produce as fine
indigo as comes from India, yet hopne has
turned this knowledge to account. And
this, too,sin the face of the fact that pure in
digo of the finest quality is- brought to this
country. -
~ KHiUitra Fish.— The tanners of Bewdley,
England* have been brought before the
magistrates for turning a quantity of white
liquid from their yard into the Severn. In
a feWminutes the river was full of dead
ffsh, and it was estimated that no fewer than
one hundred thousand had thus been de
stroyed. The tanners were fined and pro
mised not to offend again.
Bybon’s Tomb.— 11 An Inhabitant of Har
row” writes to the London : Publishers’ Cir
cular concerning - the' Byron tombstone, at
Harrow: “ Mr; John Murray, whom I hap
pened to meet at Harrow some four or five
years ago, at my request consented to bear
the whole expense of repairing, and enclos
ing with an iron railing’(to prevent further
mischief), the so-called Byron’s tomb. My
success, however, was short-lived; for on
• the following morning it was found that,
during the bight, a farther and so great an
injury had been done to the stone (nearly
half of the surface of what remained having'
been shattered off), that I was-disheartened,'
•and took no step to preserve what remained.'
Lsome time after informed. Mr. Murray of
the mischief that had been chine, and of my
having, in consequence;., been unable to
carry out his wishes. It is still open, how
ever, to preserve whatremains; and I feel
certain the vicar and church-wardens would
give their consent to a plan to prevent the
total destruction of this interesting feature
at Harrow.”
Presence of Mind in a Little Child.
—ln A. fit of jealousy a man shot his-wife
through the heart in Hardin county, 111,, a
few days ago, and made his escape through
a window. A daughter of the murdered
woman, only eight years old, roused bv the
report, entered the room, where the appal
ling spectacle of her dead mother presented
iteelf, the life blood welling up in profusion,
while an infant lay quietly in her arms. The
little girl’s first impulse Was to rescue the
babe, which would soon have 'Strangled in
the blood, and with it in her arms, and the
two other children at her side, she started
for the house of her aunt, a distance of nearly,
two miles, and reached there -before any of
the family were awake. Here she related
the tragio circumstances.
A Dignified Bbigand.— According to
the Giomalc di JHapoli, a brigand chief,
named Pace, has exclusive ideas about the
profession he carries' on. He brooks no
rivals, and not only denounces any other
•‘gentlemen of the highway” who may prac
tice in his district as “impostors,” but
actually: arrests and gives them np to the
police. He lately sent four of these compe
titors to the nearest post of gendarmes,
requesting them to be severely, punished.
Dispossession.— An association has been
started in London to aid poor persons about
to be ejected from their .homes to make way
'for railways for metropolitan improve
ments. It is stated that the various schemes
now on foot would dispossess no less than
one hundred thousand-people, in addition to
twenty thousand who have already been
evicted, •
