    BACHELOR DREAMER.
BY BbBNAT Btf.o
The world Is dreary, I am , growing old,
Wife nor bairn makes glad my chamber
still, •
The wintry season conieth with its cold,
The hearth is dark, and the wind without
is shrillf-
Yea! twilight gloams around me,—hope and
power:
MApart, like scent and color from a flower
-Yet, where I sit, sweet music floats to me:
*Tis the falling, falling of ft silver shower
Around a forest tree!
.Ah! can I hear the scented rain intone?
Can I hear the leaves that stir and sigh?
Or hear I but the movement and the moan
Of busy folk that hurry darkly by?
Nay!—for a white hand lies in mine, sweet
eyes
Shine on me, and a happy maiden cries!
Nay! for my blood again flows fresh and
free,—
To the falling, falling of the shower that
sighs
Around the forest tree!
.And can it be so many years ago,
Since I clasped her. 'neath the leaves, that
summer day?
'And were there words of parting, words of
woe?
Sits she among her children, far away?
Can she hear the sweet and melancholy
' sound?
Doth she see the shining dewdrops on the
ground?
Dothshe flutter like the leaves, and dream
of me,—
'To the falling, falling of the rain around
The murmurous forest tree?
The city closes round me, I am old,
Yet 'tis melody from country lanes I
• hear;
The wintry season cometh with its cold,
The hearth is dark, and the end of all is
near;
Yet, love, the city fadeth with its pain!
The old bright dream , is drowsy on my
brain!
And my life is flowing earthward fast and
free,— ' •
To the falling, falling of the summer rain
Around a forest tree!

[From the Charleston (S. C.) Courier..)
One of the most heart-rending and appal
ling catastrophes which we have ever been
Called upon to record, occurred at the vil
lage of Bamberg,, on the Augusta branch of
the South Carolina Railroad, seventy-six
miles from Charleston, between three and
lour o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, by
which nearly every family of that village
has been thrown into the deepest gloom and
mourning.
The scene of this distressing occurrence
was about three hundred yards from the
-depot, in a two-story frame building
known as Allen Lodge of Freemasons,
, lately used as a school house by Mr. Robert
Seabrook and his sister, the former having
charge of the male, and the latter of the fe
male department.
into this building some eighteen of the
scholars, boys and girls, bad assembled
about three o'clock, for the purpose of join
ing in a festive party given by the young
, misses to their youthful male friends.
While in the act of spreading a table with
refreshments, candies ? cakes, dcc.,the build
. ing was struck by a violent gale of wind, or
tornado, from the west, which passed over
the village, taking a northeasterly direc
tion, sweeping trees and fences, and every
thing before it. The chimney was carried
away at the same time that the roof was
rent asunder. An attempt was made by
George W. Patrick, one of the older boys,
to, open the door ; but that was found to be
so jammed as to defy removal. Another of
the youths, Charles Stewart, then proposed
to escape by the window, and jumped out
for the purpose of assisting the others, when
the whole building fell, killing young
Stewart and five others instantly, and
wounding ten others, one of whom expired
shortly after reaching home.
Thefollowing are the names and ages of
the killed: Master Angus M. Brabbham,
aged 15 years, son of Major J.J. Brabbham;
Miss Hattie Brabbham, aged 14 years,
daughter of Hampton Brabbham, Esq.,
Master Charles Stewart, aged 16 years, son
of Hansford Stewart, Esq.; Miss Urbana
ittnitz,aged 10 years,daug h ter of Mrs. Emma
Rents, lately removed from Orangeburg;
Mies Uphrasie Hoffman, aged Ib= years,
daughter of E. G. Hoffman, Esq.; Master
Elmore Sanders, aged 16 years, son of Jabez
Sanders, Esq.; Master Charles Simmons,
aged 6 years, son of A. E. Simmons, Esq.
The following are the names of the wounded:
George W. Patrick, severely; James Ben
nett, sever&v;DAiss Annie Rennett,severely;
Miss Sallie Brabbham, severely; Miss Julia
Slater, severely; Miss Hoffman, severely;
gnomes Rivers, severely; and two others
slightly, whose names we did not learn.
Only two of the party escaped entirely un
hurt.
The little Miss Urbana Rentz, who was
carried home in a' dying condition, bore her
sufferings with unusual fortitude. She re
tained her consciousness until the last, and
after telling her mother not to weep, that she
was going to heaven ' requested that her
body might be taken to Orangeburg, and
deposited alongside of her father, who died
but a few months before. Most - of those
who weresaved were found where they had
crept under the school benches upon which
the timbers had rested after the fatting of
the building.
But a few moments sufficed to spread the
-news of this awful calamity in the village,
and the whole community soon gathered
wound the place. Parents, relatives, and
friends were in the most dreadful suspense.
The bodies of both the living and dead were
either covered or wedged in ,between the
heavy timbers, and required thous° of axes,
to 'release them. The painful Beene which
ensued, as narrated to us by one of the gen
tlemen who assisted, was too harrowing for
dentription. . 'We can onlytender our heart
felt sympathies as well as the sympathies of
our people to the bereaved and afflicted cam
*, =malty of Bamberg in this sudden and
appalling calamity.
