"Then the iron entered my soul. Then I felt that in him we had no lot or part." A Strange Story from Ohio. A most cusiOnai instance of conflicting testimony in the case of a murder recently occurred in Ohio. On March 24th one Ira B. Wheeler, of North Pepin, in that State, suddenly disappeared, and it was generally suppised that he bad been accidentally -drowned in the waters of the Chippewa. A few days ago, however, his body was found near the place where the accident was sup posed to have occurred, the head marked by a deep gash across the scalp, and a se were wound over the left eye. Suspicion :at once'rested on James Carter, who had -originally made the statement that Wheeler broke through the ice and so died. The whole village was excited. Carter was subjected to a sharp inquisition, when most unexpectedly the wife of Wheeler and the accused man both confessed to the crime, -each charging the other with dealing the fa tal blow. The Durand (Ohio) Times says: "The wife's story is, that Wheeler and Carter, getting into an altercation about go ing toa neighbor's to play a game of whist, Carter dared Wheeler out of doors to fight, whereupon the latter followed Carter out, when Carter struck him over the head with a gun barrel, which brought him to the ground, immediately causing his death." Carter, on the other hand, asserts that Wheeler, was driving tacks into his boots, when his wife happening to pass by upset the paper of tacks upon the floor. A scuffle .ensued first in play, afterwards in anger. Mrs. Wheeler finally snatched up a hatchet and struck her husband a blow on the head, which felled him to the floor. Carter had - been a bystander in the struggle, and now -came forward, told the wife not to be alarmed, and proceeded to carry the corpse to the river, and thrust it through the ice. He then invented an explanation of his dis appearance. Old School Presbyterian Assembly. ST. LOUIS, June. I.—Dr. Brooks, of this city, made an able and ingenious speech last night against the proposed action of the Assembly in reference to the Louisville Presbytery, and Dr. Yates and the Rev. Dr. McFee spoke on the same side this morning. air. Davy, of New York, also opposed the report of the committee on constitutional „grounds, and Dr. Gurley made a brief speech in favor of his substitute, offered some days since. The amendment of Dr. Humphrey was laid on the table, and the substitute of Dr. Gurley taken up and passed by a vote of 196 to 37. This substitute con -damns the declaration and testimony as a slander against the church, schismatical in its character, and its adoption by any church is declared an act of rebellion against au thority. The General Assembly summons all -signers of the declaration, and all members 4 of the Presbytery who voted for it, to appear before the next General Assemblyto answer for their conduct, and prohibits them from sitting as members of any church court .higher than a session until their cases are -decided, and dissolves any Presbytery that disregards this action of the Assembly, and vests all Presbyterian authority in such ministers and elders of, said Presbytery as adhere to the action of the Assembly. On motion of Dr. Monfort, the members ex cluded by this substitute are allowed to re tain their seats in the Assembly until its ad journment„ which will probably take place A GREAT EXPRESS CONTRACT. A con tract has just been concluded between the secretary of the Treasury and the Adams Express ComPapy, by which the United :States agrees to employ that company as the exclusive agent for the transportation of all moneys and securities belonging to the United States; and to give -it, as such -agent for transportation, all moneys and :securities of - every kind which are to be transferred from one point to any other point within the 'United States. Gehl coin -and bullion is to be transported at one-half of a cent. per mile for $l,OOO for distances not over five hundred miles, and distances exceeding five htindred miles, one-quarter .of a cent. per 'sidle per $1;000; silver coin and bullion at twice the rate above specified, freight on coin and bullion to be paid in coin; all other moneys, United States Trea sury notes, .tc. twenty-five to fi ft y cents per $l,OOO, accor ding to distance, &c. AN ODD REQDEST.—SenatOT Harris has presented a petition of citizens of Florida, 'who represent that they were forced into the rebel army; that they purchased horses for which the gave their notes; that the -amount of these notes was stopped out of their pay, and that they are now sued by the holders of these notes for a second pay nent. They ask Congress to pass a law for ;their protection. Their proper appeal would -seem to lie to the courts. But it is not easy to see what they have to do in the matter at all. The holders of the notes must bring ,suit against the "Confederate government,' to recover; and as there is no such thing in -existence, they will probably get no money. Perhaps it would do , to sue Yulee or Mal lory! But they have been pardoned, and -would answer that the pardon relieves theni of all responsibility. VTNUAL Siountrrie.—We have been shown :specimens of • sacramental or pure juice wine, prepared by Mr. Alfred Speer; of Pas -sale, N. J., out of the Portuguese Samburg, a valuable grape : which he cultivates in this -country. In taste =it assimilates to ,port without its heating qualities, being anso lntely free front spirits further than its own - fermentation affords. Preference is given to it over all other wines in New York and other hospitals, as a tonic, gentle stimulant, diuretic and sudorific.- Mr. Speer has been nine years experimenting in`the production of this wine. and the newest wine he sells is four years Old.
