WASHINGTON, May 30.—The following
orders from the Heads of the various De
partments, in• reference to the death of the
late Lieutenant-General,were issued to-day:
HEADQUARTERS OF TriF, ARM.; A. G. 0.,
WASHINGTON. May 30,1866. —General Order,
No. 33.—With profound sorrow the General
in-Chief announces to the army the death
at West Point, New York, on the 29th inst.,
of its late illustrious commander,Brevet
Lieutenant-General Winfield Scott
His history is a part of the history of the
country. It is almost needless to recall it
to those who have venerated him so long.
Entering the army as a captain in 1808, at
the close of the war of 1812-14 he had al
ready, by the force of merit, won his way
to the rank of brevet major-general. In
1841 Major-General Scott was assigned to
the command of the army. In the spring
of 1847, the Mexican war having already
begun, he commenced, as Commander-in-
Chief 6if the army of Mexico, the execution
of a plan of campaign the success of which
was as complete as its conception was bold,
and which established his reputation as one
of the first soldiers of his age.
A grateful country conferred on him, in
1855, the rank of Brevet Lieutenant-General,
as a token of its estimate of his brilliant
services. As the vigor of his life, whether
in peace or ia war, had been - devoted to the
service of the country he loved so well, so
in his age his country gave to him in return
that veneration, reverence and esteem
which, won by few, is the highest reward a
nation can give. Of most commanding
presence, with a mind of great breadth and
vigor, pure in life his memory will never
fade from the' minds of those who have
reverenced him so long.
As a testimony of respect, the officers of
the army 'will wear the usual badge of
mourning for six months, on the left arm
-and hilt of the sword. Guns will be fired
at each military post at intervals of thirty
minutes, from sunrise to one o'clock P. M.,
on the day succeeding the receipt of this
order. Troops will be paraded at ten A. M.,
and this order read to them, after which all
labor for the day will cease, and the flags
will be kept at half-mast during the day.

The Navy Department announces to the
Navy and Marine Corps, the death of Lieu
tenant General Winfield Scott, of the United
-States Army. This illustrious officer de
parted this life at West Point, New York,
-on the 20th instant, at eleven o'clock, A. M.
In honor of this distinguished General, the
Commandants of Navy Yards and Stations
. will direct the flags of their several com
mands to be hoisted at half-mast until sun
set, and fifteen minute guns to be fired at
meridian, en Friday, June let, the day of
the funeral, or on the day after the receipt
.of this order, if subsequent thereto.

MISS BRADDON ON A CRITIQIIR. -- The
_London Spectator having intimated that in
Miss Braddon's novel, "The Doctor's Wife,"
the best parts were at least derived from
Flaubert's "Madame Bovary," the lady
replies thus
"Your criticism of 'The Doctor's Wife'
gave me so much, gratification hat I should
be wsnting in gratitude were I to allow you
to remain under any misapprehension with
regard to that book. Permit me, then, to
say, that between it and 'Madame Bovary'
no reasonable comparison can be sustained
—most assuredly the latter in no way gave
rise to the former. 'Gustave Flaubert's
- novel is a morbid analysis of a vicious and
sensual woman, who abandons herself un
hesitatingly to a career of unmitigated
infamy. 'The Doctor's Wife,' Isabel
:Sleaford, is a sentimental girl, whose
mind is steeped in girlish poetry, and
whose romantic tempbrament preserves
her from degradation, after leading her into
danger. The very points you praised in the
•Doctor's Wife,' are those, in which that
•story differs most from 'Madame Bovary.'
indeed, the only- resemblance it is possible
'for the most severe criticism to discover be
tween the two books, is in the solitary fact
that the heroine of each is the wife of a pro-
vincial surgeon and leads a dull life. ,All
the characters, all the situations, incidents,
scenery, dialogue, reflections, are entirely,
my own; and I defy the most searchin, - ;
:scrutiny to detect a parallel passage or "
borrowed thought.

that it is all my own thuMier, very mild
- thunder, perhaps but warranted -genuine,

A SAD ACCIDENT.—A sad occurrence took
. place in Rochester;Pa., on last Sabbath,
which resulted in he 'death of a little girl
roamed Mary, the daughter of Mr. Joseph
Anderton, fourteen years of age, and the
serious injury of his wife, Nancy A.nderton.
The little girl was lighting the fire, and in
order to hasten it she took up a ;can con
-taming kerosene oil, and in pouring it
upon the lighted kindling it exploded and
!set fire to her clothing. The flames enveloped
ber instantly, and she rushed to and clasped
her mother, crying for help. In endeavor
ing to quench the fire, the mother was ter
aibly burned, from the waist down, and
Mr. Anderton who had been near, rushed
to their qiBpsislance. and had his clothing
.considerably burned,. together with some
bank notes that were in his pocket. Mary
lingered in the greatest agony till half-past
lonfin the afternoon, when she expired.
Miss. Anderton,,who was near her. confine
anent, was so seriously burned that little
lopes are entertained for her recovery. Mr.
.Anderton had his extremities considerably
burned.
THE REMOVAL OF THE DErosrrs.—The

The clerical force of the Treasurer's office
"was exercised in the most lively manner
yesterday in receiving these transfers.
