The Convention then proceeded to an election for President. On motion of Wil liam Welsh, Esq., Rev. M. A. De W. Howe, D. D., of St. Luke's Church, Philadelphia, was nominated, and was unanimously elected viva voce. On assuming the Chair, Dr. Howe said: My BrethreZ of the Corivention:—Called to this position by your kind confidence, I cannot enter upon its duties without being solemnly conscious of the circumstances under which I am placed here; of the neces sity which has been laid upon you to call some person to the Presidential chair. When you met a year ago, our dear and re vered Bishop of many years was still living, though not with us; and our hopes and our prayers were directed towards him, implor ing the Divine Goodness that he might be spared to return to us. He who gladly assisted him and who has succeeded to his office, was then in this place and presided. He, alas, has gone on the same errand, in search of health; and .our fears almost prevail over our hopes as we think of his absence. Assuredly these sad circumstances must exert a chastening influence upon our deliberations here. The -absence of the father, one would think, would bind the children more closely to gether, and should argue for the Convention the most intimate harmony. For myself, called to this, position, and having never presided over such a body before, I must ask for your kind consideration. I shall endeavor to do my duty, to put the busi i ness through with the utmost promptness, to exercise my best judgment in the dis charge of the duties imposed, and to act with the kindliest feeling towards every in dividual member. Rev. John- A. Child was nominated for Secretary, and was unanimously elected 'viva voce. Mr. James C. Booth, a lay deputy, was in like manner elected Assistant Secretary. On motion it was Resolved, That the Right Rev. Thos. H. Vall, D. D., Bishop of Kansas, •be invited to attend, the meeting of the Conven tion, and occupy a chair at the right hand of the _President.
