Centennial Anniversary—lm pressive Ceremonies at Zion Lutheran Church. The centennial anniversary of that old Philadelphia landmark;the Zion Lutheran Church, situated at the southeast corner of Fourth and Cherry streets, took place yes terday. The time-honored edifice was beautifully and appropriately decorated on the interest, ing occasion. A large transparency, which was brilliantly illuminated in the evening, occupied a conspicuous position directly in the rear of the pulpit. It contained por traits of Rev. Mr. Demme, and Rev. Mr. lftluhlenburgh whose names are intimately associated wits Zion Church. The figures "1766" and "1866" were suspended in cir cular wreaths from eithtir side of the trans parency, and it also contained an inscrip tion in the German language having refer ence to the centennial celebration. The American and German flags drooped grace fully from either side of • the transparency. - The pulpit was tastefully ornamented i and was surmounted with a chciice collection of fragrant flowers and planle, whichpresented a very striking appearance. As the church is not furnished with gas fixtures, it was lighted last evening by means of three ela borate chandeliers suspended from the ceil ing, and containing wax tapers. Hundreds of these tapers were distributed around the body of the church, giving a flood of light nearly equal to gas. Wreaths of evergreen were placed all around the spacious galle ries, each containing the name of a former pastor of the church. Front the chande liers there drooped in graceful style, heavy :liatrgings of evergreen, which stretched across the entire interior. Evergreens were also entwined around the numerous pillars that support the gallery. The decorations gerierally-were ' in excellent taste, and the :Church presented quite a picturesque ap pearance:- - • - • The singing during the day and evening was performed 6y the united choirs of the Zion, St. Michael's and Si, Patd's Lutheran Chtirchea;an'crWas'given with remarkably fine effect The 'order of exercises during the_d4g, and evening were as follows: In the trihrtime-axi ekcellentaermillitvis delivered by Rev. G. P. Krotel, Pastor of St. Mary's LuAketanguirch,-Spring Garden street ; the * igitfg :Wos Accomplimed by an' r eXcellent or - theatre. Tlielifterriben was appropriated by the children connected with the different Lutheran sohoola throughout the city.. They. were assembled together, some two thousan d; in number and several interesting exercises were gone through with, consisting of sing-, ing, lectures,by teachers, reading of reports, cte. The Rev. Mr. Mann and Rev. Mr. , Spaeth, officiated principally, during the afternoon. The exercises during the evening consisted: of a Meeting' of the different Missionary Societies connected with the Lutheran Church throughout the city., After some singing had been performed ..in fate style, with superior organ accompaniments, the Rev. Benjamin Schmauk, of Lebanon, Pa., delivered a fine discourse, which was listened to with deep attention. The spacious building, one of the larges 6, churches internally in the country, was crowded, during the aay and evening, to its utmost capacity, and the ceremonies were listened to with the greatest interest and at tention. In the evening, hundreds were turned away, unable to gain admission. The' corner-stone of Zion Church was laid on the 16th of May, 1766, and the dedication. took place June 29th, 1769. In November, 1777; it was taken possession of by the Bri tish, who used it as a hospital until the 28th of June, 1778, when the city was evacuated by the English troops. After some neces sarY alterations in the interior, the church was again dedicated to Divine cservice, Sep.:, tember 22, 1782. The interior of the strac ture was entirely destroyed by fire on the 29th of December, 1794, but it was soon re built in November, 1796, and was dedicated with appropriate ceremonies. During the yelloW fever epidemics of 1796 and 1793, nearly a thousand members of the congre gation were carried off. The impressive funeral services in memory of. Washington ? Ordered by Congress. took place in the build ing in December, 1799, and a short time afterwards, the ceremonies of the Grand Lodge of Masons of this State, in comme moration of the same event, also occurred there, and the church remained heavily draped in mourning until the following Easter. To-day and to-morrow the church will be thrown open to the public. SP IAI. ffiOTIIML%. Most of Lase have been frauds upon the sick, for they not only contain little, if any, Sarsaparilla, but often no curative properties whatever. Renee, bitter disappointment has followed the use of the various extracts of Sarsaparilla which flood the market, until the name itself has beo - me synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still we call this compound "Sarsaparilla," and intend to supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from the load of obloquy which rests upon it. We think we have ground for believing it has cirtnes which are irrasisti.. ble by the ordinary run ofthe diseases it is intended to cure. We can only assure the sick. that we offer them tte best alterative which we know how to produce, and we have reason to believe, it is by far the Most effectual purifier of the blood yet discovered by any y.
