CHOLERA AND WOODEN LEGS. IS is an undisputed fact that comparatively few remons who have wooden legs, ever fall victims to an epidemic. EVENING BULLETIN. TUESDAY, MAY 8. 1866. BANCROFT AND RUSSELL. We took occasion, at the time of the delivery of Mr. Bancroft's oration on .Mr. Lincoln, to express our great disap pointment with much that Mr. Ban croft said, both in regard to the rambling character of his disquisition upon Ame rican history, and the bad taste exhibited in the untimely onslaught upon France and England. But we had no thought of questioning the accuracy of any of Mr. Bancroft's facts, as he is a scholar and a historian too well trained to com mit himself to grave assertions which history cannot sustain. Earl Russell however places a different estimate • upon 'his reliability, and ventures to give a fiat denial to Mr. Bancroft's decla ration of the hostile attitude which Lord John assumed towards us on the very breaking out of the rebellion. He defends himself from the charge of Mr. Bancroft, under cover of a speech in which he reproved a member of the House of Commons, for declaring that "the great Republican bubble had burst." *Earl Russell could scarcely _have made a greater blunder than in thus inviting a resurrection of his record in the opening of the rebel lion. Instead of refuting Mr. Bancroft's facts he has simply given him the chance to call his witnesses, and Mr. Bancroft appeals from Russell the Premier to Russell the Foreign Secretary, with crushing effect. He proves from Lord John's own letters to Earl Cowley and Lord Lyons, written before official intelligence of the rebellion had reached him, that the statements made in 14is oration were strictly just and true. He shows that, from the very first, as:early as May 6, 1861, Lord Russell spoke of us as ",the late Union," "the late United States," "the States which lately com posed the American Union," &c. He moreover shows that great haste wasex ercised in circulating this view through out Europe, and that Lord Riissell showed great anxiety to impress upon other courts the theory that the rebels were a regularly constituted nation to which all belligerent rights should be promptly extended. The corres pondence, as published, is a complete vindication of Mr. Bancroft, as a his torian, and places Earl Russell in the light of a very bungling diplomatist, in thus attempting to ignore testimony which was so fresh in the public mind, and so easily accessible. It will be noticed that Mr. Bancroft avails himself of this opportunity to de fend himself from the criticisms which his attack upon France and England provoked both at home and abroad. He defends himself upon the ground that "nothing so wounded Mr. Lincoln's feelings, or exercised his judgment, or tried his fortitude" as the conduct of the British Government towards our coun try. But, unfortunately for Mr. Ban croft's position in this particular, this reason for his attack does not appear in his oration at all. It stands quite dis connected from any reference to Mr. lAncoln, and it was on this account that this portion of the oration, as well as some others, was felt to be very much out of place and in bad taste. So far as the presence of Sir Frederick Bruce was concerned, Mr. Bancroft makes his case good by stating that two messages were sent to him advising him not to be pre sent. Of course, if the British Minister preferrad,*after that,to hear.disagreeable things said about himself and his coun tryi,,he had no cause to complain of any itreaoll9fcourtesy,. . . The confession of the butcher`of the Deering family will create no surprise in the minds of those who were familiar with the published details of the terrible crime. We believe this confession to be literally true. He takes no pains in it to lessen the atrocity of his climes; he says plainly that he wanted money and was determined to have it, and that he cared but little how many lives he sac rificed so that he could accomplish the object of his desires. He does not even make the plea that the crimes were com mitted on the spur of the moment, to be regretted almost as Soon as done. He declares that he had meditated the robbery of the Deerings for several months; that for a week before their murder he had been contemplating the butchery of the entire family as a means towards the accomplishing of the desired end, and that he only awaited a favorable opportunity for putting his bloody schemes into execution. He tells how he enticed the family, one by one,to the barn, until, at last, none were left in the house but little Anniennd the baby, and how he tookthe latter on his arm, while its sister ran along by the side of the butcher, who was taking them to the place which reekedwith the warm blood of the murdered mother and her slaughtered little ones. He even smiles when he tells how he enticed Miss Do lan to the barn with the story that she would find the Deerings all there. There is no need for a man who tells these things of himself, with all their sickening details, mincing matters con cerning ordinary crimes, and we believe him implicitly when he declares that he knows nothing whatever of the one hun dred and twenty dollars in compound interest notes which were said to have been in Miss Dolan's purse. We believe him, too, when he said he regretted the murders; but only because he had been foiled in realizing a large sum of money through their commission. The great poet has said that "Murder, though it bath no tongue, will speak with most miraculous organ." The crime committed by Probst wonderfully alms bates the truthfulness of this remark. No living eye but his own saw the bloody deed committed; he killed "little chicks" and all, that none should tell the story, and that even the baby's feeble accu sing wail might be silenced. He con cealed the bodies, and fled from the scene, and for four days the dread secret was unrevealed. But exposure came at last, and then shrewd men set to work to un ravel the mystery. Not only the hid den bodies told the story of the manner of their taking off, but they pointed to the author of the mischief. The aven gers of blobd were soon upon the track of the murderer, and step by step they fol lowed him through all his wanderings, after the murder, until he was in the hands of the law. How intelligently the officers of justice laid their plans, and how well they followed •the trail their intelligence put them upon, may be judged from the fact that in no essential point coes the detailed confes sion of the murderer differ from the theory offered by the Commonwealth at the time of the trisd. Not only did the District Attorney sketch the mode in which the different members of the doomed family were entrapped to de struetion, and how they were destroyed; but through the mediumof the witness stand he accounted for almost every minute of the time of the murderer from the moment he turned his back upon the desolated home of the Deerings. Murder spoke with most miraculous or gan and confounded the guilty wretch. We presume that there will be but little delay in putting the sentence of the Court into execution, and that in a short time earth will be rid of a monster whose crimes are without a parallel, . and who has no regrets for what he has done ex cept that he failed to obtain the money that was the motive for the fell deed. and that he has fallen into the hands of retributive justice. 2 50 5 / 1 50 0:11 00 5 00 TOWER HALL. 518 MARKET STR tvi: SOUTHERN TACTICS. The "Chivalry" are determined to keep the freedmen of the South in a condition of ignorance which will unfit them for the full enjoyment of civil rights. It isn favorite cry with recoil,- strutted rebels that their late slaves are too ignorant and uncultivated to exer cise the right of suffrageor even to ap pear as witnesses in a court of. justice. Passing over the fact that this condition of ignorance and degradation is the fault of the master, and the misfortune of the negro, for which the latter is not justly responsible, we come to the more im portant point that the white traitors of the South are determined that the loyal blacks shall continue in a condition of incapacitating ignorance. Among the most recent demonstrations that have grown out of this spirit are the burning of negro churches at Petersburg, Vir ginia, and the destruction of negro school-houses in. Memphis. Such little Chivalric exploits as these are common enough through the South, and we only name special instances because they are events Of the past few days. This knocking a man down and then kicking him for falling is a regular branch of slave-holding tactics, and the professors of it cannot easily relinquish their old habits. We think it would be as well under all the circumstances, to give such gentry a wholesome term of probation before they are again per mitted to introduce the manners of the plantation and the morals of the torch and the bowie-knife into the halls of the Federal Congress. THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION.- Carpenter's fine picture of the First Read. ing of the Emancipation Proclamation, be fore the Cabinet, by President Lincoln, has been elegantly engraved on steel by A. H. • . • PROBST'S CORPESSION THE DAILY .EVENING BULLETIN : PHILADELPHIA, TUESDAY, MAY '8,1866 Ritchie, and mirk* sold to subsaribers only, the price being for Artist's Proofs, $5O; India Proofs, $25; Prints, $lO. Derby et Miller ' of New York, are the publishers, and Mr. T. B. Pugh, at Sixth and Chestnut streets, is the Philadelphia agent. -As a work of art, the engraving has high merit; but this is of small consideration alongside of its interest as -a great national , picture. - The portraits of Lincoln, Seward, Welles, Stanton, Chase, Blair, Bates and Smith, are life-like, and the grouping is admirable. Mr. Carpenter resided at the White House for six months while the painting was in progress, and thus became perfectly familiar With the countenance and character of our beloved President. There should be no delay in subscribing for the engraving.
