MONO THE 1 AII7IZELS.
BY HENRY W. LONGFELLOW.
The sunset's gorgeous dyes
Paled?lowly frotu : the alciw;
And the' clear heaven was Waiting for the
stars,
As aide by aidei we strayed' -
Adown a sylvan glade,
And found our pathway crossed by rastie
hare;
Beyond the barrier lay
green and , terniiting Way,
4. 4 rehoti. with .fair laurel trees, abloom and
• • tall= " " 'l3
"1
-- Theiretipo aftender snow -
Touched with a r4si:glow3,';
-And warm sweet. Shadows. treMbiliig over
:The chestnuts sung andsighed;
The solemn oaks replied,
And distant pine trees. crooned in slumber
ous tones;
While music low and. clear
Gushed from the darkness near,
Where a shy brook went tinkling over
atones.
Soft' monies; damp and sweet,
Allured - our waiting "feet,
And brambles veiled their' thorns with
treacherous bloom; • =
While tiny'fleclis - of flowers,
Which own no name of ours,
Added their . mite of, beauty and perfume.
And bark! a hidden bird—
To sudden utterance stirred,
As by a gushing love too great to bear
With voiceless Silence long
Burst into passionate song,
Filling.with his Rweet trouble all the air.
- • Then one, whose :eager soul.
Could brook no slight control,
Said, • "Let us thread this pleasant pall,
- dear friend--
jf thus the way can be -. . •
So beautiful to see,
How much more beautiful must be the
- -end!
" "Follow! this solitude
May shrine the haunted wood,
storied so sweetly in romance and rhyme—
" Secure from human ill; • "
7 - -And rarely peopled still
By Fauns and Dryads of the olden time.
"A spot of hallowed ground
By mortal yet unfound,
Sacred to nymph and sylvan deity—
_Where foiled Apollo glides
`.- - And bashful Daphne hides
Safe in the shelter of her laurel-tree!"
"Forbear!" the other cried—
"o, leave the' way untried!
Those joys are sweetest which we only
- -Aiud the impatient soul,-
. That seeks to grasto ,the whole,
Defeats itself by its own eagerness.
"Let us not radely.shake
The dew-drop from the brake •
Fringing the borders of this haunted dell;
And the delights which are—
The present and the far—
Lose half their charm by being' nown too
well!
"And he mistakes who tries
To search all mysteries—
Who leaves no cup undrained, no path un
- tracked;
Who seeks to know too much
Brushes with eager touch
The bloom of Fancy from the brier of Fact.
"Keep one fair myth aloof
;From hard and actual proof;
Preserve some dear delusions as they seem;
Since the reality,
How bright soe'er it be,
Shows dull and cold beside our marvelous
dream. .
"Leave this white pace unscored. •
This rare realm unexplored,
And let dear Fancy roam there as she will;
. Whatever page we turn,
• ' However much we learn,
Let::there be something left to dream of
still!"
Wherefore, for aught we know,
The golden apples grow
In the green vale .to which that pathway
leads;
The spirits of the wood
Still haunt its solitude,
'And Pan sits pining there amongst the
reeds! .
A Singular Etplosion.
[From the Prov!deuce Journal] .
About twenty minutes past 11 o'clock
Friday morning, one of the iron heaters
(fire-proof chambers fifteen feet square
and occupying two stories of the build
•ing) at the Providence Rubber-Works,
on Dyer and Dorrance streets, blew, up
with a loud report, demolishing entirely
a triangular portion of the two-story
building, about one hundred feet longon
both streets and, fifty feet across. About
one hundred feet more of the same
building, on Dorrance street, was un
roofed and badly shattered, while the
• south wall of the four story, building
was torn so that it will have to be taken
down, and the extreme corner of that
building:demolished.
Fortunately, there. ; were no persons in
the demolished portions' at that time.
The :works were not • employing: a large
force of hands. . In the lower building
the-only Person who had occasion to be
in the part destroyed, had left a few
minutes before. _ the _third story of
the other blinding,' severatgirls were at
work very near the place where the wall
was broken in, buts they ; escaped, and
none of the help were injured.
The cause .of the :explosion was the
ignithin of the vapor of naphtha(inwhich,
substance the rubber is "soaked i.e apre
liminary stage of the manufacture) with
in the chamber, perhaps'bY the taking
fire of some portion of the goods, of
which a large quantity were destroyed
in the heater. That was a
very violent one is shown not only by
the amount of devastation caused, but
by "the distance to which objects were
blown, the fifth story windows of a
building on Clifford street, upwards.,pf
150 feet distant, being; broken by thein.
The streets were filled with debris; but
we heard of only one passer-by who was
burt. J.W.Briggs, mison, residing
at 84 Point street, who was driving by on
Dyer street, had his side bruised and his
wagon filled with bricks.
There was insurance on the buildings
for upwards of fifty thousand dollars; in
New York and Providence offices. Of
the latter, the Commercial, Merchants;
• Equitable, Gaspee and Narragansett had
policies of „woo each._ The damage by
fire;however, - was inconsiderable. .The
engines played upcsi-the ruins and: kept
them from burning Much. The -build
_ ings destroyed had just been repaired
from the effects of a recent fire. •

This Cordial, which dates as far hack , as 1510,• is an
anti,apoplectic tonic, digestive,
„and of an exquisite
taste. The salutary plante which compose it, - kathered
on; the slopes of the hills of Normandy, saturated with
the vivifying emanations of a Northern sea, makes it
one of the best cordials and one of the most -efficient
preventives against epidemic affections. _
Of late, the French medical corps 'has been almost
unanimous in prescrib ng its use to- the albic 7 •Who, by
their Imperfect gastric disposition, were more to

large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Marmot of
Sarsaparilla for one dollar. Most of these hive been
