Exeenuen in Cambria County. Yesterday . aftqrn o o n at one o'clock, in the jail yard at Ebentsburg, was terminated, by • the , fulfdment of the-law,-which requires a life-for a life, the terrible and widely-read Cambria county tragedy. John Baptist Houser and Daniel Bowser, convicted in the December, term of the Cambria County Couit, and sentenced to death, were hanged for the murder, on the 7th of June last, of Pollie Panl and Cassie Munday. This`wasathe first capital execution ever consummated-in Cambria county. THE MURDER. In Croyle township, Cambria cottroY) not far from Ebensburg, lived an old, o ..itnarried woman named Pottle Paul. s‘.4) was up wards of sixty years of age tp-'1 had lived there for some forty year* She owned a small farm which she wooKed herself. She was exceedingly industr tons and frugal, and by rigid economy b i r treasured up a con siderable sum of gp and silver, supposed to amount to i'et'weVL three and four thonsand doliPts. Sh :0 lived retired and in comp l ete so rtude, except that a young German gfrit Cassie Munday, about fifteen years of,Age! lived with her to learn spin ' ping. At about sunset on Thursday evening, J.ne 7th, 1865, a little girl who was driving . a cow from pasture near Pollie's farm, heard I' cries from her house, and shortly afterwards saw two men run - around the barn and dis appear. The child reported what she had seen, but no investigation was made until the next morning. Then some neighbors went to Pollie,'s house and discovered that she was missing. Her body was discovered in her barn, having been dragged there On her head was a terrible wound, evi dently inflicted by a large, nicely-finished club, that was found near. In an orchard near by was, discovered the body of Cassit Munday, her brains having been dashed out with another club, which lay near her. In the house everything had been turned into confusion, and all of value taken away. THE CRIMINALS. The two criminals, aside from their guilt in this particular case, were hardened and persistent wretches. They seemed always. to have hunted in couples ' and have served two terms together in the penitentiary. Houser was an ordinary looking man about thirty-bight years of age. He was born in Bavaria, and emigrated with his parents to New Jersey. He came to this city in 1855. In 1862 he formed an alliance with Bowser for the purpose of committing burglaries. They were captured and sentenced to the penitentiary, from which they were re leased only a short time before the murder. His wife is now in jail, on idiotic vagrant. Bowser'was also a German, about thirty five years of age, and has been in this coun try since childhood. He was a most wicked and vicious man, seeming to be a constitu tional criminal. About ten days ago he tried to commit suicide by opening the veins of his arms, but was discovered in time to save his life. He left a paper in the hands of his spiritual adviser which proved to be a partial confession. In it he acknowledged a part of the guilt, and implicated Reams and Blanchard, declaring Houser innocent. He was a firm believer in spiritualism and claimed to be haunted. He also threatened after death to mercilessly haunt Chief Hague, Judge Taylor, and all others who had a hand in his conviction. After his attempt and failure his demeanor changed very materially. He lost his reckless care less appearance and became more thought- Ail, seeming to pay serious attention to what spiritual advisers said to him. PREPARATIONS. Recently the prepartions for the execution have leen progressing rapidly. There was a report current that the scaffold on which they were to suffer was the same as that on which Marshall and Frecke and Mrs. Grinder died. This was a mistake. It was on the same principle as the gallows here, but was entirely new. It was erected in a little yard built back of the jail, and was put in full sight of Homer's window, and he looked out and watched the preparations with evident interest. The ropes, carefully manufactured of hemp were made in Reserve township, and were about half an inch in thickness. The last night of the condemned was passed by the wretched men in earnest conversation with their ministers until a late hour. Then Houser laid down and slept soundly. Bowser did not sleep until very late. Both were in ex cellent spirits in the morning, and seemed perfectly resigned. THE EXLCUTION, Yesterday morning was very clear and beautiful. The town was very quiet, the people, notwithstanding the expected ex citement, seeming rather inclined to leave the place than to collect about the jail. The guard that had been detailed had very little to do to keep order. Only about forty per sons were present to witness the execution. At precisely twelve o'clock Sheriff Myers entered the cells of the condemned and in formed them that they must come forth to tlie. They were pinioned and at once led to the scaffold. Bowser went first, accompan ied by Rev. Christy, and Houser followed with the Rev. Father Giles. Behind walked Rev.. Edmund Longenfelder and Sheriff Myers. Neither of the men showed any trepidation. On the scaffold brief religious exercises were conducted, both culprits joining with apparent earnestness. Their feet were then bound and they bade farewell to the Sheriff, the reverend gentlemen and Drs. Bunn , and Lemmon, who haveattended them during their imprisonment. The white caps were drawn over their faces, the drop fell and the law was satisfied. Hou ser died with no struggle; Bowser twitched :but *slightly. The prisoners made no con fession. In the cell Bowser repeated that, Houser was innocent. The bodies were both interred in the Catholic burial ground .at the north of the place. Sheriff Myers had made the necessary ar rangements in the most perfect manner, and deserves great credit for the feeling man ner in which he discharged his duties.— _Pittsburgh Post of Saturday. tit ›ARU ANDREW WELEELE•R, ED W.
