    ANTONIr IN AE IS.
BY ROBERT BUCHANAN.
IA we are side by side!—One dark arm
furls
Around me•like a serpent warm and bare;
The other, lifted 'mid a gleam of pearls,
Holds a full golden goblet in the air:
Her face is shining through her cloudy
curls,
With light that •makes me diunken un
aware,
And with my chin upon my breast I smile
Upon her, darkening all the while.
And through the chamber curtains, back
ward roll'd
By spicy winds that fan my fever'd head,
I see a sandy flat slope yellow as pale gold
To the brown, banks of Nilus wrinkling
red
In the slow sunset; and mine eyes behold
The'-West low down beyond the river's
Grow sullen, ribb'd•by many a brazen bar,
Tinder the white smile of the Oyprian star,.-
A bitter Roman vision floateth black
Before me, in my dizzy brain's despite;
The Roman armor brindles on my back,
/Ay Swelling nostrils drink the fumes o
But:then—she smiles upon me!—and I lack
The warrior will that frowns on lewd
delight,
And, !passionately proud and desolate,
I smilesto.tinswer to the joy I hate.
Joy coming nninvoked, asleep; awake,
Makes sunshine on the grave of buried
powers; ••
Oft-times I wholly loathe her for the sake
Of manhood slipt away in easeful hours;
But from her lips mild words and kisses
break
Till I am like a ruin mocked with flowers;
I think of Honor's face—then turn to hers—
Dark, like the splendid shame 'thi4 she
confers.
Lo, how her dark arms hold me!—l am
bound
By the soft touch of fingers light as
leaves:
I drag my face aside, but at the sound
Of her low voice I turn—and she per
ceives
The cloud of Rome upon my face—and
round
My neck she twines her odorous arms and
grieves,
Shedding upon a heart as soft as they
Tears 'tis a hero's task to kiss away!
And then she loosens from me, trembling
still,
Like a bright throbbing robe, and bids
me "go!"
When pearly tears her drooping eyelids fill,
And her swart beauty whitens into snow;
And lost to use of life and hope and will,
I gaze upon her with a warrior's woe,
And turn, and watch her sidelong in
annoy—
Then snatch her to me, fiush'd with shame
and joy!
Once more, 0 Rome! I would be son of
thine—
This constant prayer my chained soul
ever saith—
I thirst for honorable end—l pine
Not thus to kiss away my mortal breath,
But comfort such as this may not be mine—
I cannot even die a Roman death;
I seek a Roman's grave, a Roman's rest—
But, dying, I would die upon her breast!
DEATH OF THE LANDGRAVE OF Hgss'E-
HomsusG.--Homburg lea Bains, Homburg
e,s monts, Homburg vor der Hobe, is in
sackcloth and ashes. At "trente et qua
rante" the dealer's hand hasfor the moment
been suddenly stayed, the roulette wheel
is still, and there is no game for anybody to
make. The gaming saloons are, in fact,
closed. It is a "relftche" at the theatre; the
concert hall, too, is silent as the grave. The
"high-born, well-beloved" Ferdinand,
Landgrave of Hesse-Homburg, has been
gathered to his fathers. At- seven o'clock
on Saturday morning, while the snow was
falling heavily, the hale old man who go-
Termed this little principality died at the
ripe age of eighty-three, not at the pic
turesque Schloss, but at the hunting
lodge in the forest, about three miles off,
where he ordinarily resided. Nearly the
whole of the shops in the town are closed,
and Homburg has put on an outward aspect
of grief, which is due not merely to respect
for its late ruler, but to apprehensions for
its own future. Prince Louis of Hesse
Darmstadt (husband of the Princess Alice)
is the heir to the principality, and the great
question here is whether he will confirm
the lease of the gaming tables, extending
for twenty-five years to come, which was
granted by the late Landgrave, And this
is naturally a source of much anxiety to
-the citizens who have hitherto depended
-directly, if not indirectly, on the gaming
table for, their livelihood. The Grand
Duke of Hesse-Darmstadt is away from the
-ducal residence on, it is supposed, a diplo
matic visit to his cousin of Austria or of
Russia, apropos of the threatened
-war between Prussia and Austria,
whichpeople in these parts look upon
as certain. In his absence, and until his
pleasure has been made known in reply to
-the telegrams which have been sent to him.
there is an interregnum in Homburg. No
body can venture to do anything.; even the
'Editor of the Landgrajliela Hessischen Re
gierungs Blatt dare not -issue an extra
"beilage" announcing the Landgrave's
death. Hotelgeepers hardly know what to
think; they pretend that Homburg, with
its splendid situation at the foot of the Tau
nus mountains, and its beautiful climate,
and its medical waters, will flourish when
its salons de jeu are shut forever, 'provided
only the young Prince Louis of Hesse will
bring his charming Princess hither, and
keep court in the ancient Schloss. The agents
de change however, and the shopkeepers,
who minister especially to the luxury and
extravagance of.the gamblers are quite dis
mayed at the more moral regime being in
troduced. As for the officials, of the kur
haus, their case is even worse. A man can
turn from almost anything to be a croupier.
but there he ends: once a croupier always a
croupier. And then the closing of the Hom
burg tables would - doubtless be, a fatal blow
to the same Infamous institution elsewhere.
Hitherto it has been made an, excuse for the
maintenance of the tables at Baden, Ems,
Wiesbaden, that it was no use closing
them While 'those of Homburg, where the
play was wildest awl - most extravagant, re
mained open. But if the young Landgrave
has the moral courage to shut up the Rur
saal here, the precedent will remove the ex
cuses of other princes, and the monopoly of
gaming may go to out Monaco.

OFFICIAL ARMY REGISTER.—The first
volume-of-the -official army register, pub
lisheffin Compliance with an act of Con
gress, has just made its appearance. It was
intended to embrace the names of all volun
teer officers of the New England States, to
gether with a brief sketch ofthe history of the
different regiments, promotions, discharges,
dismissals, transfers and a large amount of
other data of interest to former officers of
the volunteer force. ' The mistakes and
omissions in this edition will probably lead
to its suppression by order of Congress.
The next , volume, now being printed, will
soon be tailed, and is to embrace the same
facts relatiire to New York and New Jersey
regiments. The series will consist of eight
volumes, which will be issued from time to
time, from the Government Printing Office,
and will be-forwarded to all applicants :ort
the receipt of one dollar per volume, the
actual cost of publication. No copies are
printed for meMbers of -Congress.
