EVENING BULLETIN. SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 1866. ABRAHAM LINCOLN. The year has rolled around and we have come again to the Saturday that marks the terrible tragedy which took from us Abraham Lincoln. The im press which that dark day made upon the hearth of the whole American peo ple was a deep and lasting one, and all over the land, men, women and chil dren are living over again, to-day, that which they heard and felt and saw when it was first told them that Abra- , ham Lincoln was dead. The profound solemnity of that day will never be for gotten. The first wild, fierce wrath, the sense of solemn awe that followed it, the strange Heaven-sent patience that spared these who were felt to be the indirect participators in the crime, the funeral change that passed over us, as the banners of - victory faded away into the sad draperies of mourning, all come back to us to-day. Not to remind us of the nation's loss, for it is never forgot ten. The work of the year has been to deepen, day by day, the strong hold which Abraham Lincoln had already laid upon the affections of the people of this country, before the hand of the miserable assassin took his life. The events which have transpired in thena tion's` history during these twelve months past have all tended in one di rection, so far as his memory has been concerned. Loving hearts and hands have been busy in laying before us the story of his life, and the people have al ready become familiar with the details of his eventful career, and begin, at least, to comprehend: the depth and height and breadth of that pure and no ble character, which is to be for the fu ture, the type and model of 'the true American man. And at' we' have] thus studied him, in this first year of our loss, we have been continually reminded Of the immeasurable instance that seems to separate him from the statesmen, pol iticians and great , men t-who have sur vived him. Again and again our need of just such - a man as Abraham Lincoln comes back upon us with all the painful consciousness that we can scarcely hope to see that need supplied. The qualities that made his character peculiar, and that won for him his extriordinary power are so rare among public men, and indeed, as they existed in him, so rare among any men, that we were not wise in our expectation that those who survived him might take up and wear his mantle. He stood so above them all, even while his lowliness kept him so close to the common people; he lived by rules and principles so foreign to the maxims and ideas of ordinary politicians or, statesmen; he accomplished his work in such strong, rough, unpolished fashion; he counted himself so truly the servant of the people; he so spent him self, soul, body and spirit for the coun try and not for himself, that it would Pe as strange to find his counterpart coming after him, as it would be for the people of this country ever to forget, or cease to love him. Year by year, this dark day will come back to us with its sor rowful memories, and long after we who now live are turned to dust, the gen erations that are to come after us will continue to " arise and call him blessed." 2 50 all 50 111 0 0 5 CO 4 00 Tomcat Kars, blB Market street. Many of our German friends complain of the remarks of the BULLETIN con cerning criminals from abroad, and several take us to task for calling the murderer of the Deering family a Ger man. If he is not a German, it is hard to say what he is. He says he is from Strasburg, which is in French territory, but his discharge papers as a United States soldier say he is from Baden, which is German. He said yesterday morning that his name was "Ganter," but he signed himself "Probst" at the prison, and his discharge papers call him • "Prepost." The language he speaks is German; not the purest, perhaps, but it is the only language he knows well. He does not speak French at all, and most Strasburgers have some knowledge of that language. The man has already given such contradictory accounts of himself that it is hard to believe any thing he says. It matters little what country he comes from. But it is to be regretted that some means cannot be adopted for checking the indiscriminate emigration to the United States of scoun drels like him from every country in -Europe. B.
