THE TRIPLE CHILD MURDER IN N. YORK.
—Coroner Gamble concluded an inquest last
evening, at the Forty-seventh street Police
station, in the case of the three children of
Mrs. Ernestine Schotz, who were murdered
on the night of the 17th of January last. The
verdict was that the mother smothered her
offspring namely : Caroline Schotz, aged
eight years: John Rhode, aged two years
and six months, and William Rhode, aged
one year and three months. It seems that
the woman's husband abandoned her three
or four years ago, and took to his bosom
another woman. She thereupon made a
morganatic marriage with John Rhode,
went with him to dwell in a hovel in West
Forty-seventh street, and there bore him
two children. Early last winter difficulties
rose, and Rhode threatened to leave her,and
fearing that he would execute his threat and
leave her, with three children and one un
born, to beg, Mrs. Schotz smothered the lit
tle ones and attempted suicide by arsenic,
Rhode, since the arrest of his mistress, has
been committed to the Tombs to answer as
the father of her unborn child.—N. Y.

TORNADO IN CAMBRIA.—A frightfully se
vere tornado swept over part of Cambria
county, Pa., on Thursday, doing a vast
amount of damage. Twenty acres of trees,
on the farm of John Miller, Jr., in Yoder
township, and over ten acres on the farm of
Joseph strayer, were torn up by the roots.
Strayer's fences were blown like feathers
over his fields. His barn was moved from
its foundation. On the farm of Fronheiser
& Kurtz the large orchard was almost
wholly destroyed, and the house, barn and
spring house were unroofed. On the farm
of the Cambria Iron Company much damage
was done to the fences. When the hurri
cane reached the southern boundary of
Johnstown, it struck the side of the hill and
prostrated thirty or forty acres of heavy
timber, twitting into splinters those trees
which refused to come up by the roots.
The barn on Dibert's estate was unroofed,
and the whole building was moved about
three feet. From here the hurricane passed
into Richland township, where it almost de
stroyed Mr.
- Abraham Goughnour's large
sugar camp; and threw down hundreds of
fine trees on his farm. At this
.point it
seems to have spent its force.

DEATH FROM CHLOROFORM.—Mrs. Latitia
S. Lister, aged 38 years, wife of Thomas L.
Lister, Jr., residing on South Fourth street
near German, went with an acquaintance
yesterday afternoon to the rooms of Mr.

'which he did, in a quantity, as he thought,

THE TRIAL OF JEFF. DAVIS.
THE PENNSYLVANIA WAR CLAIM.
Rumored Trouble in the Cabinet..
From Washington.
[Special Despatch to the Ennethl.l
WASHINGTON, April 10th.—The HOllBB u
diciary Committee to-day took up the reso
lution referred to them yesterday, in regard
to the trial of Jefferson Davis. They ap
pointed a sub-committee of three to examine
into all the evidence in possession of the
Government, connecting Davis with the as
sassination of President Lincoln. Also to
inquire into the reason why he has not been
brought to trial.
The bill to pay Pennsylvania seven hun
dred thousand dollars for war expeases has
just passed the Senate.
Rumors are again rife of trouble in the
Cabinet. They were called together this
morning at an early hour.
The President is not in a very good humor
since the Civil Rights bill was, passed over
his head.
XXXIXTIE CONGRESS —FIRST SESSION.
WASHLtiGTON, April 10.
SENATE.-Mr. Saulsbry (DeL) presented
a resolution reaffirming the resolution
adopted by the Senate in July, 1861, that
the war was conducted to re-establish the
Union, with the rights of the States unim
paired, and endorsing Presidbut Johnson
for his efforts to restore peace and harmony
on that basis.
Mr. Sumner (Mass.) objected to the pre
sent consideration of the above and it went
over.
Mr. Saulsbury gave notice that he would
call it up on Friday next.
A bill to reimburse the State of Pennsyl
vania for her war expenses was passed.
A bill to grant 100,000 acres of public land
to aid in constructing, a ship canal from
Lake Superior to Lac la Belle, in the State
of Michigan, was passed.
Two thousand extra copies of the Coast
Survey report were ordered to be printed.
Uotsx.—Mr. Chanler (N. Y.) stated that
if he had been present yesterday when the
vote was taken on the Civil Rights bill he
would have voted in the negative.
Mr. Driggs (Mich..) statedthat hehadbeen
called out by unavoidable business yester
day, and was absent but twenty-seven
minutes. When he came back the bill was
passed. Any one who knew him knew that
he would not have dodged the question. If
he had been present he would have voted
aye.
Mr. Dawes (Mass.) offered a resolution;
which was adopted, directing the Secretary
of War to furnish the House with the find
ings of the commission in the case of the
awards for the captors of Booth and Harold.
Mr. Cullom (Ill), from the Committee on
Foreign Affairs, reported back two joint re
solutions of the Senate, authorizing Ad
miral Paulding and Commodore William
Radford to accept decorations from the
Ring of Italy in recognition of their ser
vices rendered to the frigate Re D'ltalia,
which were considered and passed.
Mr. Raymond, (N. Y.), from the Come
mittee on Foreign Affairs, reported a reso
lution requesting the President to inform
the House what steps had been taken to
protect the rights and interests of American
citizens in the fishing grounds adjacent to
the British provinces, and whether any
legislation or other action on the part of
Congress is in his judgment necessary to
secure those rights and interests, in conse
quence of the abrogation of the Reciprocity
treaty of 1554.
Mr. Raymond explained the condition
of the question in regard to the fisheries;
and the resolution was adopted.
