WASHINGTON, April 2, 1866: Win. J. ,Jones, Esq., Dist. 'ln obedience, .therefore, to the order of the President, you are hereby instructed to re lease Bradley T. Johnson from his bond. Financial. ROCHESTER, N. Y., April s.—The Bank ing-house of Ward & Brother suspended this morning, after sustaining a run of three days' duration. They held deposits to the ,amount of $1,000,000, and express the belief that they will in the end be able to pay all demands. The house held too much . real estate, and other property not immediately available. There is considerable excite ment in the city to-day; but it will probably subside. The • other banks and banking houses are considered sound. NEW Yonx, April s.—The firm of Beatty Co., tea merchants, suspended to-day, with liabilities of $600,000. This failure is attributed to a member of the firm having issued bills to the amount of $250,000 on forged documents. D. G. Schofield, a member of the Petro • leum and Mining Board, has also suspended payment. MEAnviLLE Pa.,April s.—At a meeting of the principal creditors of Culver, Penn & Co., held to-day at the McHenry House, resolutions were unanimously passed ex pressing entire confidence in the ability and integrity of the firm, and recommending that the assignment be canceled, and an ex tension granted of six, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months. A committee appointed to report on the best policy to be pursued, submitted the following report: That we have full confi dence in the mtegrityand financial abilityof Culver, Penn & Co., and are satisfied that they can realize from their assets more than any assignees can possibly. We, therefore, recommend that all the creditors of Culver, Penn & Co., enter into a legal agreement for their release from their assignment, and stipulate therein that the debts of the said firm shall be paid in equal installments, in six, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four months. ° From Nashville. NASHVILLE, April s.—The river is four feet on the shoals, and falling. There was considerable excitement ih the -city to-day consequent upon the arrest of several persons formerly in the employ of the Quartermaster's Department, under Col. Charles H. Travis. Mr. H. Bruner, formerly Superintendent of mule corrals, is shortly to have a trial for alleged frauds, and numerous witnesses, formerly in the employ of the Department, are to be summoned. Several arrivals from Louisville were noted to-day. Mr. Isham Henderson, of the Louisville Journal, is expected to arrive in this evening's train. Several' parties who are believed to be im plicated are about. The late Cashier of Colonel Irwin, Mr. Albert Payne, whose departure for Europe caused some comments, is reported to be indicted by the Grand Jury, and as having been sent for to appear here. These cases will reveal some astounding facts relative to the management of the -Quartermaster's Department in this city. An attempt was made to-day to release two prisoners, Messrs. Phillips and Dur ham, who were held for want of bail by a -writ of habeas corpus, but the effort was -unsuccessful. From Mello). NEW ORLE4Ng, April s.—Advices from - Havana to the 29th and the City of Mexico -to the 19th have been received. Gen. Almonte has accepted the mission to France. A new campaign is to be organized in The police are in diligent pursuit of the _men who caused the assault on the Belgian Envoys. The affair between Mendesa and Regal is still in a fog, though it is believed they were both whipped, The destruction of the greater part of Corn- Anandant Byron's detachment is confirmed. Byron and 130 of his men, out of the force •of 160, were killed. The bodies of the dead, _including that of Byron, were horribly =- Mated. _ Cortinas joined Gen. Garetez at Cindela, - Victoria, acknowledging the latter as his _military . superior. Tampico has been reinforced, and the gar :xison is soon to be attacked. _ • Southern Methodist Conference. NEw ORLEANS, April s.—The MethodiSt Conference was organized to-day, Bishop Andrews presiding, and Bishop Early assist -ing, and Dr. Summers acting as. Secretary, A Standing Committee of one from each State , was appointed, The city clergyman comprise a Committee on Public Worship. Preaching has been arranged for every _night during the session. A hundred dele ,gates are present, and another hundred are expected to arrive soon. This is the first conference that has been held in eight years. It is proposed to publish a news paper advocate. Resignation of Surgeon-General HARRISI3URG, April s:—Dr. Joseph A. Phillips has resigned the, post of Surgeon- General of Pennsylvania, and that post has been closed. Colonel.
