    - -The-Death-of -31r.-Plerte.-1
A special meeting of the Press Club of
Philadelphia was held yesterday afternoon •
to take action in reference to the death of
Mi. Wm. S. Pierie, commercial editor of
the North American, and a member of the
association.
The President, - Casper -Souder, Jr., Esq.,
feelingly stated the object of the meeting.
'The occasion was the first in which death
• had entered the association. It had taken
from it one of its most useful and valuable
members, and it was fitting that the club
'should take appropriate action thereon.
_7' Mr., Stephen N. Winslow, of the Om
-mereial List, moved that a committee of
!five be appointed to prepare resolutions ex
pressive of the feelings_ of the club toward'
_ their departed brother. This was adopted.
and Messrs. Winslow, John Davis Watson.'
Wm. V. McKean, Thompson Westcott and
"Lewis'Wain Smith 'were appointed`-the
,committee. ,The following was reported;
The. Press. Club of Philadelphia having
Xeceived intelligence of the death •of Mr.
•
Wm.._S. Pierie, one of its members, place
upon its record this testimonial of esteem
- for the deceased and of regret for his death.
Mr. Pierie has , been connected with the
newspaper press of Philadelphia for twenty
one years, and during all that period he has
shown himself to be a most faithful man in
the discharge of the peculiarly delicate
duties of a commercial , editor. He was a
man of strict integrity. Nothing has oc
curred in his long career to blemish his pure
reputation in the slightest degree. In his
intercourse with his associates he was in
variably kind -and courteous. He was a
journalist of untiring industry, always at
the place of, duty, and in the foregoing re
spects was a model which his juniors may
well regard with a spirit of emulation. In
all the relations of life he was a thorough
Christian gentleman, and well entitled to
every tribute of respect.
Resolved, That the foregoing testimonial
be placed upon the minutes of the associa=
tion.
Resolved; That in respect to the memory
of the deceased, the members of the Press
Club will attend the funeral in a body; and
that a copy of the resolutions be transmitted
to the family of the deceased.
Resolved, That a member of the Club be
appointed to prepare a biographical memoir
of the deceased, to be read at some future
meeting of the Club.
Mr. John D. Watson seconded the resolu
tions, adding a brief account of his personal
intercourse, for some twenty years, with
the deceased, and expressing the hope that
the end of all present be like his.
Mr. Stephen N. Winslow spoke to like
effect.
Mr. John Bell, who had known Mr. Pieria
also for more than twenty years, described
as far as proper a recent intercourse with
him in his closet. His trust was steadfastly
fixed, and his last end was peace.
The resolutions were adopted and Mr.
Winslow was appointed to prepare the
memoir. Adjourned.

LIVE &rock. IN TEXAS.—A correspondent
writing from Texans, Texas, says : But few
people have an idea of the vastness of the
live stock interests of the prairie portions of
this State. This (Jackson county) is a
prairie county, timbered upon the water
courses, much similar to the praries of Illi
nois and adjacent States in appearance and
arrangement. It has a population of not
over twelve hundred, and has never voted
more than one hundred and fifty names. The
assessor's books show about eighty thousand
head of cattle owned in this county alone,
besides horses, sheep, hogs, &c. Of this
number of cattle there will be ready for
market this present season from five to six
thousand head of fat beeves, four years old
and over. These will bring from fifteen to
twenty, dollars in specie per head. All
transactions here are on a specie basis. The
cattle are owned generally in stocks of from
one thousand to eight thousand head in
each. - Several persons own as high as six,
seven and,eight thousand head.
A ONE-ARMED HERZ utEs.---The Eldorado
(Iowa) Ledger gives an accout of a man
living in Hardin county, who is said to be
stronger than Dr. Winship. His name is
Walter Hadlock. He was a member of
Company C of the 6th lowa Infantry. Dur
ing the march of Sherman's army to the sea
he lost his right arm in a skirmish near M -
con. He seems to suffer but little inconve
nience from the loss, and chops wood with
his left arm. It is no unusual effort forhim
to cut and cord two and a half cords per day,
and be offers a wager of fifty dollars that he
can split one hundred and fifty rails a day.
BRIGHAM YOUNG'S GARDEN.—The editor
of the'Salt Lake Telegraph says that on two
and a half acres President Young raised last
year 750 bushels of peaches, 400 bushels of
apples, 22 bushels plums, 25 bushels of
strawberries, 2 bushels of pears, 25 pounds
of cherries, 1,875 pounds of grapes, and
gooseberries, raspberries and currants in
multitude.

pleasure to recommend it to the public. Some eight

tamed. I then procured a bottle of your exc-llent
Balsam, and before she had taken the whole of the
contents of the bottle there was a great improvement
in her health. I have, in my inuividcual case made
frequent use of your valuable medicine, and have al-
ways been benefited by it,
