MARCH WEATHER.—The wind during
yesterday and to-day has been very high,
and the , atmosphere has become verychilly.
The thermometer at nine o'clock yesterday
morning, indicated thirty-seven degrees. but
the mercury then commenced descending.
At the same time this morning, at nine
o'clock, it denoted twenty-five degrees:
Last night-the air was - very fresh and cut
ting. Overcoats and shawls, which had al
most entirely been laid aside, have been
brought into use again. The gale yesterday
had no regard for the quietness of the Sab
bath. The' wind whistled loudly, shutters
'were bangebt window-sashes rattled,: and
huge signs were swung to and fro with a
harsh, grating sound, very annoying to the
ears.
Considerable damage was done about the
city by the high wind. AiVnings were
ripped up and carried for some distance.
Swinging. signs were blown down, and in
some instances which came under our no
tice, were hurled with great force a distance
of several, hundred yards. Fortunately the
streets were almost entirely deserted during
the principal portion of the day, or doubt
less, many persons would have been in
jured. 'Unfinished buildings suffered
greatly. Scaffolds were torn down, and
chimneys and exposed portions of brick
-work were demolished. At Twentieth and
Carpenter streets, the roof of a house was
hurled from its position.
The Delaware was exceedingly rough
during the day. The ferry-boats could al
most make the trip to Camden, without
steam, and were fairly blown into the docks
at our sister city, while' on this side of the
water, great difficulty was experienced in
getting in properly. Almost every vessel
moored to the wharves along the river front
of the city, Were more or less damaged by
riding violently against the docks.
ACCIDENTAL INSURANCE.—Major Cyrus
B. Haldeman, late — Assistant Adjutant-
General of this district, we understand, has
, entered into a contract to'sell accidental in
urance policies to passengers in the varioaa
"Lroad trains, immediately upon their de
parture from the depots in this city. By the
system introduced by Major Haldeman, the
name and residence of each purchaser is
Careftilly registered by his agents and filed
with the records of the company, so that in
e,ase of a ' fatal accident, the hittory of the
transaction is preserved and the rights of
heirs guaranteed. Thus, for a few cents, a
traveler, whilst seated in the oars, can pro
vide for his family a sum of money ranging
.ftom $3,000 to $lO,OOO, in case of fatal injury,
.'or a weekly compensation of:from $l5 to $5O
' for himself, in case he should be disabled
by an accident.
CITY MORTALITY.—The number of inter
ments in the city during the past week was
285, against 341 daring the same period last
year. Of the whole number 138 were adults
And 147 children-65 being under one year
of age; 153 were males, 132 females, 80 boys
and 67 girls. The greatest number of deaths
occurred in the Nineteenth Ward, being 22,
and the smalleit number in the Sixth Ward,
- where only three were reported. The prin
cipal causes of death were—Apoplexy, 4;
croup, 8; consumption, 42; convulsions,l4;
diphtheria, 8; disease of the heart, 8; debiity,
12; scarlet Rfver, 9; typhoid fever, 11; in
flammation of the lungs, 29, and old age, 9.
THE • MOON PHOTOGRAPHED.— Among
the latest wonders of photography are stereo
scope pictures of the moon, which show the
"Queen of Night" in bold relief, and with
all her peculiarities of surface just as they
are seen through a first-class telescope.
There are none of the strange plants, ani
mals, eic., visible that were described by
the ingenious Mr. Locke; but the seas,
plains, mountains, craters, &c., upon the
surface of the moon may be distinctly
traced. Wm. Y. McAllister, No. 728
Chestnut street, has these curious stereo
scopic pictures for sale.
ALLEGED GARROTING.—Before Alderman
Dealer, on Saturday afternoon, Peter
O'Mealey was charged with robbery. The
accused, it is alleged, in company with ano
ther man, garrotedlhe proprietor of a lager
beer saloon, at Fifth and Pear streets, on
Friday afterboon,- in an outhouse in the rear
of his premises, and robbed him of his
pocket-book, containing $165. The defend
ant was found secreted in the loft of a build
ing in the same neighborhood on Saturday
morning. O'Mealey was bound over in the
sum of $2,000 to answer.
Ma. GOUGEE'S LECTURES,—The sale of
tickets for Mr. Gough's Lecture at the
Academy, this evening, on "Habit," and
his new Lecture on "Temperance," on
Thursday evening is progressing rapidly, at
Clacton's and Ashmead dr, Evans's. Persons
wishing desirable seats have no time to lose
in procuring them. We are authorized to
state that tickets remaining unsold can be
had at the door oa the evenings of the
lectures; though it is hardly safe to depend
on that contingency.
RECEIVING STOLEN GOODS.—Levi Bern
leimer and wife, residing near Seventh
and Market streets, were held in $3,000 bail
.on Saturday, for a further hearing by Ald.
- ...l3eitler, upon the charge of receiving stolen
goods. Two pieces of unfinished cloth were
found in the house by Detectives Taggart
and Lamon, while engaged in searching
for stolen property, and the officers received
a very unsatisfactory explanation in regard
to the , goods.
FENIAN 3,IEraTNG.—A mass meeting of
the Fenian Brotherhood was held on Satur
day evening at the Academy of Music.
Atfdrew J. Wynne, District Centre, presided.
Speeches were made by Stephen J. Meany,
General B. F. Mullen and P. A. Collins, of
Massachusetts. Great enthusiasm prevailed
among the audience.
Sanious FALL.—Mary Kelley, 22 years
of age, while taking down clothes from the
roof of a two and a half storied house on
Monroe street, west of Third, on Saturday,
tell to the pavement and was badly injured.
She was taken to the Hospital.
Box DROWNED.—John Hoffman, six years
old, was drowned about 10 o'clock yester
day morning, while playing in a boat at
Maiden street wharf. The body was reco
vered and taken to the residence of his pa
rents, in the rear of No, 907 Delaware avenue.
The Coroner held an inquest.
SCALDED.—Frederick Matson, six years
of age, was badly scalded, on Saturday. by
running into hot steam, which Was emitted
from the boilers of a mill at Canal and Pol
lard streets.
KICKED BI ,A HORSE.—James - Ward, 44
years of age, was kicked by a horse on )Sa
turday, at Twenty-sixth and South streets,
and was seriously injured. He was taken
to the Pennsylvania Hospital.
Wiercit roux - D.—A. watch was picked
.on Chestnut street, on Saturday afternoon.p
The owner can recover it from Sergeant
Maps at the Central Station.
