Thisprovoked a strike and the demand for coal, as well as the price. became'at once active. The bill was laid over on third reading. An act prohibiting the city of Philadel phia from taking property for city use at more than three times the assessed value vas defeated. An act preventing frauds at elections in Philadelphia was strongly urged by Messrs. Ruddiman and Kerns, and vigorously op posed- by Messrs. Quigley, Donnelly and Josephs. The bill was passed to second reading and laid over. The following bills were introduced ; one .by _Mr. Bemus, requiring the Secretary of the Commonwealth to file the consolidated contract of the Great Western Railroad, to gether with affidavits showing the time at -which such contract was originally pre sented to him for filing, and all agreements executed by the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad Company since such contract was originally presented shall be regarded as valid and binding. Mr. .Koons presented a bill incorporating the Good Will Silver Mining Company. Mr. Davis, a bill authorizing the reduc tion of the capital stock of mining compa nies. Also, incorporating the Hemlock Railroad Company. Mr. Sobers presented a supplement to the United Fireman's In surance Company. Mr. Lee, a bill for a bridge over Frankford creek. Also, for a classification of licenses. Mr. Donnelly, a bill declaring eight hours to be a day's la bor. Mr. Myers presented a bill incorpo rating the Pennsylvania Slate Company. Mr. Allen, one requiring school directors - to take the oaths of office. Mr. Armstrong, a bill supplementary to the New York and Middle Coal Field. Mr. Sharpless, a bill requiring civil and military officers to take an oath not to use intoxicating liquors.
