HARVEST TIME.
BY ANNA S. HAYWOOD.
•
The lengthening shadows stealing froth the lea,
Creep down the rocks, and stoop to kiss the sea:
Then hurriedly climb up, and turn to flee ,
Back to the purple hill.
lip the broad, pattahe reapers homeward gor
The little gleaners wander to and fro,
And from the valley lying Just below
Echoes the tinkling rilL
The lindefuf, leaning over thegreen lane,
Ave Lung with samples of the olden grain:
Caught from the fulness of the adentrain
as it bore home its prize.
Their olustering leaves press the brigt light away,
'And so beneath reigns twilight all ttie day,
save where some straying sunhshoi, like a fay,
- ' Peeps in with laughing eyes.
B_ . • •• . .
eyond the harvest fields the rolling land
Slopes to.the sea; toward the glistening - strand • t ,
The waves ride proudly.: and to greet the sand
EV1. , ..1 - Eaeh bows its silvered crest
Then, rising up, sweeps out again to sea,
Chanting upon their way sweet melody,
And so they rise and fail increasingly. i
• And never are at rest. - - - .
•, . .
Wrapped in a peaceful stillness Natnre Lies, .
lAe if, mobile gazing at the quiet skies,
Sue had looked past their depths, had Met God's eyes'
And In that gaze grown calm. . !
.
As if awed by the solemn sight ahe lay,
Or fallen asleep, was dreaming Time away,
Singing unconsciously by night and day,
A reverential psalm. .
Half veiled in golden light of shimmering air,
The landscape stretches, wonderfully fair,
No trace of paling beauty anywhere;
Nature is in her prime.
In richest robes the hills and woods appear,
The lakes and springs lie motionless and clear,
Ruled by the fairest queen of all the year,
Beautiful liarvcst tame.
The silver river windirg through the lea,.
The singing birds on every greenwood tree,
'he music of the never-silent sea,
The deep and solemn wood,
.Are never-changing witnesses that He
Who made all these fair things so gra.iously
Is mighty in His love, and prayertully
I whisper "God is good l"
Hushed for the night is labor's busy hum,
The patient oxen from the home croft come.
Their yoke unloosened and their day's work done,
Down to the little spring ;
In from the sea the fragrant breezes roam,
Bearing the scent of sea-flowers freely blown,
And murmuring of their wild, free ocean home,
Thus gladden everything.
Like little lambkins hastening to the fold,'
And seeking shelter from the night and cold,
Drift the white clondlets to the gates of gold,
And enter one by one.
Ranging all day about the quiet sky—
The great wide pasture ground stretched out on high
They've wandered, and now weary homeward hie,
Where gleams the sinking sun.
Into a rainbow-painted setting place.
The golden orb rides down with stately grace,
blow veiling in br.ght clouds its radiant face;
And lo ! at its command
Longer the shadows fall on rock and tree,
From my sight fades the harvest plain and sea,
And twilight clasps its pale arms lovingly
Around the peaceful land!
Et Locomotive Running Wild.
A singular occurrence took place on
Saturday morning at the junction of the
Western Maryland with the Northern
Central railway. The locomotive "Mo
nocacy," of the. Western Maryland rail
road, was on the track of that road, as
usual, ready to back down for the pas
senger train of said road, which goes
from the city with the mail train, and
cuts loose from said train below the
junction. By some mistake on the part
of the switch tender at the junction the
switch was left open, and the mail train,
running at her usual and fast speed, en
tered the track of the Western Maryland
• railroad. The engineer and fireman of
the Western Maryland railroad locomo
tive seeing the danger made every effort
' Jo start the engine and get out of the
way, but the distance and time being so
short they could not get the engine
- started in time to prevent a collision,
and therefore left her to her fate. The
concussion was so great that the bolt
coupling the tender with the engine was
thrown out and one safety chain broken,
the tender being but slightly injured.
The engine bounded off, with but one
single chain connecting the tender with
the engine, the engineer and fireman,
with others, immediately following on
foot. The locomotive was soon at a
speed of forty miles per hour, and having
a full furnace of wood there was no tell
ing where she would be brought up.
She passed two very short curves on the
road at a fearful rate of speed, much to
the wonderment of all along the route,
not knowingwhat the wild freak meant.
One of the provisions of the charter of
the Western Maryland Railroad Com
pany is that the whistle is to be sounded
or the bell rung at all road crossings, but
it has not been ascertained that this
locomotive complied strictly with this
provision. It was fortunate that the
pumps were on at the time as the cold
water pumpea into the boiler had a
- beneficial effect in arresting her wild
career. The cold water having arrested
her, she was found sewn miles up the
road, and strange 4 to say, near the 'water
station where she had been accustomed
•to get .her supply. When found, a
colored man was occupying the seat of
the engineer, with his fiddle, and was
entertaining himself and the locomotive
with the tune of "John Brown's Soul is
Marching On." He had not mechanical
skill sufficient to shut off the valve, and
the steam getting up again by the stop
page, she was about starting again on
her wild course as the engineer ap
proached the engine, seeming to fear a
reprimand from her master for thus un
ceremoniously leaving him; but the
colored man stad she should flat move a
peg, and had, as he said,"scotched" the
wheels with wood from the tender. Had
it not been for the pumps being on, she
would have run into the freight train
east, which was only four miles distant.
The engine and cars of the Northern
Central Railway were but slightly
broken, and fortunately np passenge;.s
were injured. Baltimore Sun.
The Springfield Armory.
The Springfield (Mass.) Republican
says: "Nearly three hundred boxes of
cavalry sabres and egyipmints were re
ceived at the army last wee from Rich
mond and Fortress Monroe. The ma
- chinery which has been in-preparation
for the last:four months. -for- remodeling
the guns with Mr. Allen's bieech-loat t
ing improvements, is now nearly fin
ished, and the first lot of five thousand,
• . changed , by General Dyer, has been
r -commenced. The machinery has had a
, complete new outfit of tools and fixtures,
and is the best in the country for the
• purpose. The improved gun does not
differ much in general, appearance from
an ordinary Springfield rifle,- as- far as
size and weight are concerned. The
.range and force of the ball is also Ala
terially changed.
"The improvement consists in the
= breech-loading invention by whic a
eighteen cartridges may be fired in a
crZtminute. The - cartridge is inserted by a
,single motion, and the same motion re
versed throws out the empty shell and
, leaves the gun ready for another charge.
'The - Cartridges used are made at the
armory, - as are also others of various
patterns. This improved weapon has
not-yet been examined by a Government
commissioner, but the invention, when
rperfected in August, last, was so satisfac
tory. to General . Dyer, that he ordered
'five thc•usand altered.: The cost;of,patik-
ing the change is from . m, five to six ciollars
per piece. Should the recently-appointed
commissioner adopt this , as the standard
arm, the remodeling w'll bring a large
increase of work to the , a mory."
