Dreadful. Tragedy In New York.
[From the R. Y. Ban, of Feb.l9.]
Soon after seven o'clock, on. Saturday
evening, the Police of the 22d Precinct were
informed that a terrible tragedy had taken
place at 236 West 47th street—a wooden
shanty, the residence of John Roth, a Ger
matt'inechanic. It appears that upon his
retaining home from his work, he found
the - M , oman with - whom he cohabited,-Anas-
Una Shotz, also a German, and twenty-six
years of age, lying at the foot of
the bed in a state of insensibility, while on
the bed lay her three children dead, but
vistill warm. Roth tried to arouse the woman
and failing, he gave the alarm, when Drs.
J. Lewis and R. Stewart tried the stomach
paMps and other remedies, which so far re
yived her that she, it is thought, Will re

caroline, aged 6 years, the fruit of a mar
riage with her husband, Schotz, from whom

The number of railway disasters in
England, last, year, was greater than
usual, and many 'heavy verdicts were
given in favor of persons who received
I severe injuries. The Southeastern Rail
way Company were "east!' in very heavy
damages in several cases especially those
arising out of the Stiehurst accident.
In one-of these-7-for the loss • of - a hus
band,leavitig two ehildren;-the dainages
were £7,000—(535,000)—£4,000 for the
widow and £1,500 for each of the chil
dren. In four other of these Staplehurst
cases theverdicts were for personal inju
ries, £3,500, £2,000, £1,500 and £550,
making altogether £14;550. Other claims
for losses by death and personal injuries
caused by this terrible accident , were
compromised by payment of some very
large sums, varying in. amount, but
making a total, with the sums recovered
by the verdicts above mentioned, of
about £50,000::,
The
The Northwestern Company were de
' fendants, in eight actions which were
brought' to trial. In one a verdict was
given for the company; in another, the
I plaintiff was nonsuited. In the six
others.. verdicts were. found for £1,250,
£350, £2OO and £300; also £lOO for the loss
lof a wife. Against the Great Northern
there were three actions for, personal in
juries, in one - of which the dainages
[awarded were £4,720; in the other two,
£5OO and£l7s were given. The Lanett
14hire and Yorkshire Company had nine.
actions against them for personal inju-
Ilies. The verdicts were respectively for .
£3,000, £1,250, £1,200, - £7OO, £2OO, £2OO,
£180 ; $l5O and £l7O.
Pittsburgh Monitors.
What may be regardedas Pittsburgh'S
most ambitious and likely to become
most famous efforts in the ship-building
line of business, left the city in a com
pleted state for Cairo and the Missis
sippi, yesterday: These were the light
draught Monitors Sandusky and Ma
rietta, which were ordered before the
termination of the war, and will now
serve to illustrate what we could have
done to aid in the defence of the great
rivers if peace had not fortunately ren
dered the proof unnecessary.Bothvessels
were built in the most scientific and
substantial manner, and reflect the high
est credit on the resources of the estab
lishment of Messrs. Tomlinson S. Co.,
where they were constructed. They,
with several sister monitors, were in
tended for shallow waters, and only
draw from five to eight feet. They
would have been efficient auxiliaries in
keeping the Mississippi and its tribu
taries clear of batteries and guerillas,
had they been finished before the
squelching of the rebellion. The Urn
vua, a light draught monitor also, but of
different model in some particulars from
the Sandusky and Marietta, yet remains
at the wharf on the Allegheny river, at
the foot of Pitt street, receiving her fin
ishing touches. The only matter to be
decided now is what will be done with
the impregnable little monsters now that
they are ready for service. - Unless we
have a war with France in Mexico, they
can be of no practical use whatever.—
