"J. 8., NEW YORK."—Mr.- Montgomery lost his match with Mr. Lichtenhein through Sheer nervousness, nor were we surprised at the result, well knowing that Mr. M.'s tem perament unfitted 'him for heavy match play. On the other subject we can only say that "slow play," "laying back for bets," and "dining out," are excuses that are fri volous and contrary to fact. "PHILADELPHuS."—The following Phila delphia papers have had Chess Columns, e. g. Sunday Mercury, Evening Journal, Sportsman Chronicle, War Press, Saturday Night, and our own paper. _Some of them died from injudicious management, and others from decline of interest manifested. Our own column was started Oct. 30th, 1858. " STIIDEET."—If Lou. beat your adversary seven games to fouin_ you are entitled to give him a pawn and me. If he objects, then decline playing with him. A match for the first seven games ha been commenced at the Rooms of the Phila delphia Chess Club, between Mr. Reichhelrn and Mr. J. I. Jellett. The conditions are that Mr. Reichhelm is to give the odds of the pawn and two moves in every game and that either party winning seven games to four, shall be entitled to a change of.dds in his favor.
