    Death of General William Meltey.
General William Hicke3e,:Chief-Clerk of
the Senate of the United Statea, - died at his
residence, near Washington, yesterday
morning, aged sixty-nine years . , having
been in delicatehealth for the past twelve
months., He was one '':or the oldest, as he
has been'one - of the most-conscientious, of
national officials, and was forty-two years
in the service of the Senate. His experience
in Congressional life would fill volumes,
and his knowledge el parliamentary pre
cedents and law will survive to enlighten
coming generations. His work, "The Con
stitution, is a standard , authority; and is a'
monument of hiipatience,skill'and impar
tiality.
The clerks of the' Senate held a meeting
yesterday afternoon, and were addressed by
Colonel John-M.-Forney, the • Secretary of
that body; saYing; among- other 'things
—"General Hickey was in many respects a
remarkable man. Of him can be said what
cannot be said of every man who has
reached old age,./ that 4eareer was as
blameless as his death was honored. He
had known many of the distinguished
characters of American history; had wit
nessed many "tumultuous and nnforgotten
,cceries. •" At ne time in his lengthened ex
perience has the slightest suspicion affected
his fair fame."
Major Wm. McDonald,Acting Chief Clerk
cf the Senate, paid a deseived tribute to the
memory of his old friend and official asso
ciate, and remarked, as a proof of General
Hickey's own sterling integrity, it was only
necessary to refer to the fact that while va
rious political organizations were formed
and dissevered, they still fosmd. and , left
him in his position. -
Appropriate resolutions of respect were
passed, and a committee were appointed to,
visit the relatives of the deceased, and to
offer their services and condolence.

J.
J. G. Bean, who was arrested-some time

There is excellent navigation on the Red

cotton are stored there, and the same quan
tity at Jefferson.
It is rumored here that Gen-Canby is to go
to Washington as - successor to Gen. Thomas,
Adjutant General, resigned. •
The military authorities, it is expected,
will soon turn over all of our banking insti
tutions to their regular directors, and those
in liquidation to the civil . authorities. The
suits against the Bank of New Orleans have
all been withdrawn.
CoMmodore Winslow has arrived per the

Itt - velmos and aged persons, whose sys
tems require the aid of a gentle stimulus
can find nothing better adapted to their no
.cessities, than• Mr. Speer's Samburg wine.
Snowing the manufacturer, they can rely
with confidence upon its purity, and a pure
wine is something rarely found in these
days of adulteration and humbug.
The brandy is said by physicians to be
superior to French - brandy for medical
uses. .
The signature of Alfred Speer is over
' , every bottle of his wine and the brandy he
imports.
Our druggists keep it.
