The New Year's Night of the l7uforinnate.
F,*0.2 , L TX-E (i,LERMA.2I QF RICHTER.,
An , old than, on New 'Year's night, stood
by dOw and gazed with a lOok' of
long despair out on the immovable; forever
blooming, ,
heavens, and down -on the still
:pure :white eart , whereon, now, no one
was so joyless and sleepless as he. And his
grave stood near him. It was covered with
the snows of ages, and not decked with' the
verdUre of youth. And he brought nothing
with him from his:whole rich life—nothing
save errors, sins and disease, an emaciated
body,- a desolate soul, a breast, full of remorse
and an ' old age full of repentance. The
beautiful days of his youth hovered around
him this day as an apparition, and carried
binr, hick again to the bright morning when
his fait first placed him on the crossyray,
of life—the right, leading hincion the sunny
_pathway of youth into a distant. quiet land,
full of light and harvests and angels; the
left, going down to the mole hills of vice, in
a dark cavern full ,of ,dripping poison, of
twisting adders, and of a gloomy, sultry
'dampness. '
Alif the serpents hung around his breast!
The poisonous exudations were on his
tongue; and he /mew where he was. -
Senseless, and with unspeakable terror,
he cried out to Heaven: "Give me youth
again! 0 Father! place rue again on the
Croseway, that I may choose ,another path!"
But his ,Father and his ,youth were long
He saw, a • Will o' Wisp, dance hither and
thither in a swamp, and then disappear in a
graveyard. And he said: "It represents my
days of, folly!" He saw a star shoot from.,
tip heavens, and shimmering in its face,
disappear = on, 'the earth. "That am 'I,"
said his ; bleeding, heart, and the serpent
tooth of repentance dug •deeper in the
wound,
His burning fancy pointed to him the
creeping - pight-wanderers' on the roof, and
the wind-mill raised its arm, threatening a
blow. , One image remaining in the empty
charnel house gradually assumed his own
form. In the midst, of his anguish suddenly
the music of the new •year floated down from
the belfry, as a distant church chime. He
was gently moved; he gazed around on the
horizon and over the wide earth, and he
thought of .the frienda- of his youth who
were now happier and better than he: ,
teachers of earth, fathers of happy children,
and he said: •
"Oh! I could, as yon, on this first night,
have slumbered, with tearless eyes, had I
wished! Alas! ye dear parents, I could be
happy, had I fulfilled your New Year's
wishes and teachings!"
In his feverish memor' the time of his
youth came up before him, the same as the
mask which had assumed his image in the
charnel house. Finally, it became, through
his superstition, which on New Year's night
had seen the spirits and looked into futurity,
an active youth, who in the pride of man
hood at the Capitol, drew outthe thorn; and
his former blooming countenance became to
him bitterly changed. He could look no
longer. He veiled his eyes. A thousand
hot tears streamed down, absorbed in the
snow! Comfortless and senseless, he only
murmured a lone sigh. "Oh, youth, come
again, come only again!"
And it came again. for he had only thus
terribly dreamed on New Year's night. He
• was still a youth. HIS errors, alone, had
been no dream; but he thanked God that
he, still young in the foul faith of vice, could
reform and walk over again the sunny paths
which lead into the pure land of harvests.
Turn with him, young reader, if you stand
in the way of error. This terrible dream
will, in future be thy judge, and if those in
grief should call "Come again,. beautiful
youth;" so it will never come again.

The Massachusetts Legislature.
BOSTON, Jan. 3.—The Massachusetts Le
gislature met, to-day. The House elected
jamelA, Stone, of Charlestown, Speaker,
giving him 123 votes,against 117 for Harvey
Jewell, of Boston. The Senate chose Joseph
A. Pond for President, unanimously. Gov.
Bullock will not probably deliver his mes

The organization of the Digislature was
' further completed by the election of Win.
S. Robinson, Clerk, and Edward S. Jones,
Sergeant-at-Arms of the House. John Mor
risey was chosen Sergeant-at-Arms to the
Senate, and Stephen Gifford, Clerk.
Gov. Andrew sent in to the Senate a
special message, covering several impor
tant documents of local interest, for the
consideration of the Legislature. .
The message says tha, total expenditure
incurred by Massachusetts on account of
the war amounts to $27,705,100. This sum
includes only such expense as accrued
under the direction and supervision of the
several State Departments as authorized by
Legislative enactments.
As far as ascertained, the expenses in
s: curred by cities , and towns for bounties
amount to nearly an equal sum
After the organization and reception of the
special message - and documents, the Go
vernor and the Legislature proceeded,
under the escort of the Cadets, to the Old
South Church, where the election sermon
was preached by the Rbv. EL H. Quint, of

From New Hampshire.
CONCORD, N. H., Jan. 3.—ln the Repub

son a just citizen, a sincere patriot and a
distinguished statesman, and declaring that
the tone and temper of his recent annual
message to Congress meets our warm ap
proval and augurs well for the success of his
administration, and we pledge, him our
hearty confidence and support in all his
efforts to restore harmony and mutual trust
between the different sections of the Union
upon the principle of universal libertY and
exact justice to all.
Another resolution declares that the
scheme to plant .by - foreign bayonets an
Austrian despotism. in Mexico, had its origin
in undisguised hostility to the United States,
and is a standing insult to our power, and a'
menace to our republican institutions.'
The
