(Episcopal) Church., - ; Boston, .E,ridgy, on
the occasion of tit; consecration-of the Rev.
George M. Randall; D:D.,`Piesent:Rector
of the Church of the NloiSsialr,'as'M.issionary
Bishop of Colorado and parts adjacent.
Rt. Rev. John Henry.:Hopkins, D D., LL.
D., Bishop , of Vermont;.'- and , Presiding
Bishop of the. Church, in the United States;
Right ReV. Manton EaStburn, D.'D.; Bishop
of Massachusetts; Right Bev. Benjamin
Smith, D. D.,' Bishop of Kentucky; Right
Bev. Carlton Chase, D. D.,' Bishop of New
Hampshire; Right Rev. Thomas M. Clark,.
D. D., Bishop of Rhode Island; Right Rev.
Thomas H. Vail, D. D., Bishop of Kansas;
and Right Rev. Thomas N. Staley, Bishop
of Honolulu, were consecratons.
Rev. E. M. P. Wells, D. D.,of St. Stephen's
Chapel, opened the service by ;reading the,
Exhortation, Confession and Absolution.
The Psalter was then read by Rev. T. W.
Snow, of Brookline; the First Lesson by
Rev: James Mulchahay, Rector of Grace
Church, New Bedford; the Second Lesson,
in third chapter of First Timothy, by Rev.
Chas. Burroughs, of Christ Church, Quincy;
and the Creed and Prayers -by Rev, J. E.
Watson, of this city. " The 99th selection of
Psalms was given out by Rev, John P.
I:Rob
inson. of the Free Church of St. Mary'
Morning prayers being ended, the nte-
communion service was begun by B hop
Clark, of Rhode Island, the collect' app inted
for this special' occasion being used. The
Epistle was read by Bishop Staley,of H. no
lulu, and the Gospel by Bishop , Chase, ll \ of
New Hampshire. The 96th Hymn was then
sung,after which Bishop Eastbarn deliveired
the sermon. • , . -
Bishop Eastburn selected for his text the
concluding words of the ,eighth verse of the
first chapter of the. Acts of the Apostles:
A. d ye shall be witnesses unto me, both
in ;Jerusalem and in all Ju.dea,. and in.Sa
marls, and unto the uttermost part of the
earth." The preacher said that we were
reminded in the text of that which is most
prominent in the function of the bishop,—
the bearing /witness to man concerning
Christ. The bishop is to be a testifier, a
preacher. He is to magnify his office by
magnifying with his tongue the glory of
Emmanuel. The work of our brother will,
and cannot but be, above all, that of a chief
minister of God; sounding out, in the ears of
that scattered population, the grace of him
who, though ri.ch, for our sakes became poor
that we, through him, might be rich. In
the second place the preacher enlarged upon
the truth that every bishop of the Church
of God needs the continual aid of the Holy
Ghost to enable him to do the work of Christ,
and to deliver his message in a spirit worthy
of its grandeur and importance. It seems
only at the hour of death that the mind
begins, if ever this side of the grave,
to comprehend any thing of the merely
that gathers around the cross of
Christ and the glory to which it leads. The
bishop can but see how dependent he is
upon a. power from on high. Well, then,
may be himself pray for the illumining
spirit of Christ to reveal itself in his own
heart; well may the people offer their fer•
vent prayers to the Holy Ghost to enable
him to.see the King in all his beauty, and to
proclaim his goodness and mercy to his
people. I call upon you, therefore, con
tinued the preacher, not only to send forth
with this, our brother, your good cheer and
hopes for his happiness, but the still more
valuable accompaniment of your interces
sion that the doctrine of Christ crucified
may be presented with increased grandear
to his soul; that he may be gifted to preach
that there is one chosen of trod "to bind up
the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to
the captiVeS, - iiiid the opening of the prison
to them that are bound. In the latter part
of his discouxse Bishop Eastburn spoke, of
the spiritual condition of this country at the
present time. We have, he said, unmis
takably faithful followers of Christ in our
land; noble institutions for the dissemina
tion of God's work, but yet there are for
midable ,obstacles in the path of religion..
These obstacles the newly elected Bishop
will have to, face in the - peculiar " - region to
which he is assigned. There .he *ill to an
intense degree find the world upPermost in
the minds of men. To successfally combat
these obstacles he must be , thoroughly con
secrated to' 'his work. In, conclusion the
Bishop addressed some feeling words to the
Bishop elect..
When the sermon was ended the ceremo
ny of consecration took place, The elected
Bishop was presented by Bishops Clark and
Vail to the Presiding Bishop, sitting in his
chair near the holy table. ' The testimonials
from the HouSe of. Bishops, being de
manded, were read by Rev. Dr. Balch, sec
retory Of the House of Bishops, and - the tes
timonials from the Honse of Representatives
by Rev. J. S. Hodges, of Newark:, N. J.
The Presiding Bishop then required of the
Bishop elect the promise of conformity to
the doctrine, discipline and worship of the
Protestant Episcopal Church, after which
prayer was .read.. At its conclusion the
Litany was read by Bishop Smith, of Ken
tucky, Bishop Vail reading the concluding
prayer. The Presiding Bishop next asked
the usual consecration vows of the candi
date of fidelity to his work, and determina
tion to act -conscientiously. After the prayer
the Bishop elect was vested in the robes of
his office. As he knelt, Veld, Creator
am
t was sung, the Presiding Bishop begin- '
ming and bishops and congregation answer
ing by verses. Then the Presiding Bishop,
with all the other bishops, performed the
solemn ceremony of "the laying on of
hands,"the candidate kneeling before them.
Communion was next administered. The
benediction closed the solenin ceremony,
which continued over two hours and a half.
The music on the occasion was by a cleri
cal choir, under the direction of the Rev. J.
S. B. Hodges.'
