    (For the Philadelphia Evening Pulletina
DEDICATED TO
BY ONE OF HIS tISTENERS AT THE ACADEMY
Hark ! from the, piano coming,
Sounds that never came before!
Now the busy bee is humming,
Now the ocean's hoarsest roar;
Now the music-boa's tinkle
Leaps upon the wondering ear; ;
Now the gentle, showery sprinkle
Shows the coming storm i 5 near;,
Hear the rushing rain-drops fAlling,
Heavy on the forest leaves;
Hear the thunderstorm appalling;
Hear the dashing from the eaves;
Hear ..‘John Brown," hear "Fisher'ssHorn
pipe," •
' Hail Columbia," three in one;
Each distinct, and yet all mingled,
By Apollo's gifted son:
Hear the whistling locomotive,
Hear the rumbling of the train;
Hear the pausing at the Station,
Hear the going onagain ;
Hear the snow-bird , on the ash-pan,
Hear the oddities that throng
Round'the doleful hurdy-gurdy,
And the beggar's screeching song.
Hear all these ' and more and richer,
Where are allthese wonders from?
From the chords of the piano, t
And the fingers of Blind Tom.
Handsome Testimonial
The last soldier attached to the Corn Ex
change Regiments having been mustereJ
Out of service, the Military Committee of
that Association held their final meeting at
12 o'clock to-day, and concluded their la
bors by presenting to. Samuel L. Ward.
Esq., their Treasurer; a handsome gold
watch, valued at $5OO. Seth J. Comly,Esq.,
the Chairman of the Committee, mad few
eloquent remarks, 'in which he refefted to
what had been accomplished by the Go
vernment during the past four years . ; and
what the members or the Corn Exchang e
Association had contributed towards the
suppression of the rebellion. He was
followed by A. G. Cattell, Esq., who said:
The Regimental Committee of the Corn
Exchange Association are now assembled
probably for the last time, and the object of
this meeting is to present to you a testimo
nial of their high approbation of the faith
ful manner in which you have performed
the arduous duties of Treasurer for the Com
mittee.
This committee was the offspring of the
loyal heart of the Corn Exchange Associa
tion of Philadelphia. When the treason of
the South culminated in open rebellion,and
the starry flag that waved over Sumter was
trailed in the dust, you will remember hoc% ,
upon its first announcement, we laid aside
our samples, ceased buying and selling,and
gathering around the roEtrum, resolved,
with one voice, to throw the banner of our
country to the breeze in front of the hall,
and pledged ourselves to keep. it floating
there until the brave hearts and stout arms
of our "boys in blue" should plant it again
on the blackened walls of Fort Sumter.
And we have been faithful to nor nlarluA.
Nor did the patriotism of this body expend
itself in words. Men were needed tut we
defence of our country, to maintain the
honor of our flag and to prevent the dis
memberment of our glorious Union.
This Association promptly determined to
embody their patriotism in a practical shape,
by raising under its auspices and placing in
the field, at least one Regiment of Infantry.
It was for this purpose this committee was
raised, and to the successful accomplishment
of which, all have labored so assiduously
and contributed so freely of their means.
I shall not, on this occasion, occupy the
time by any detailed statement of the work
we have done. Suffice it to say, this com
mittee, acting for and in behalf of the Asso
ciation, put into the field ten regiments and
a half, and raised among themselves a fund
of one hundred thousand dollars, which has
been expended in raising these regiments,
providing for the comfort of the soldier, and
supplying the wants of the needy families
of these "who left their homes to defend
ours." The duties of this committee ceased
only with the close of the war, and the
glorious triumph of our cause.
You, sir, have for more than four years
acted as our Treasurer, and the custody and
disbursement of this large sum of money
has been intrusted to your care. Not only
so, but you have acted extensively as the
almoner of our bounty to the families of the
men in our regiment,personally seeking out
and relieving the needy and suffering. You
have visited the front on more than one
occasion, paid over the bounties provided
for the men, and from the day.our first regi
ment left, until they returned and were
mustered out of the service, you have been
the medium through which our brave boys
have from time to time conveyed their
pay to their loved ones at home.
I am sure I speak within bounds when I
say that in your official capacity you have
received and paid out more than a quarter
of a million of dollars, and this, too,without
a single error, or the discrepancy of a sin
gle dollar; and that in all these four years
you have given cheerfully more of your
time than you have devoted to your own
business.
We are here to-day to bear testimony to
your faithfulness in this labor of love, and
to thank you, not only for ourselves, but in
behalf of the brave boys and their families
whom you have so diligently served.
And now, sir, permit me, in the name of
this committee, to present to you this .bean
tiful American watch, provided by the
members of the committee, at their own
cost, as a testimonial of their sense of your
valuable services to them and to the
country.
They have inscribed upon it these words:
"Presented by the Corn Exchange Regi
mental Committee to Samuel L. Ward, their
late treasurer, as a testimonial of their high
appreciation of his earnest loyalty and his
self-sacrificing labors in behalf of the sol
diers of the Corn Exchange Regiments and
their families."
And it only remains for me to add that
these are the heartfelt sentiments of every
member of the committee, and that their
best wishes for your health and happiness
will go with you through all the years of
your life.
Mr. S. L. Ward made a short but very
apppopriate address,.and -the committee
dispersed.•
