BusEemss EDUCATION.—Young men who
desire to get a thorough education for business, should
attend Bryant, Stratton dr. Kimberly's Rosiness Col
lege. Assembly Buildings, Southwest corner of Tenth
and Chestnut streets. The unprecedented success which
this Institution has enjoyed since itvfoundation, and
the high standing whictrits graduates have taken in
the business community, recommend it as the most
thorough and practical college in the country. Tae
merchant, the farmer or professional man can make
his son no better Christmas present than a scholarship
at the above institution.
THE La. PIERRE HOUSE.—By reference to
an advertisement bi another column It will be seen
that the La Pierre House on Broad s , reet, below
Chestnut, is offered for rent. The price asked (05,000
per annum) is but $3,100 more than that received for
the property before the we' . when hotel property was
far le:s remunerative than at present, and when taxes
were very considerably lighter. The La Pierre was
always a popular house, and now, when the current of
trade is steadily setting . westward. the property seems
to us to offer a very desirable opportunity for persons
familiar with hotel management.
ENGBAVINGS.—The cdmmencement . of
A. S. Bobinson's Sale of fine pro'of engravings took
place last evening at Bcott's Art Gallery. MO Chestnut
street, and althonsh the attendance was very large,

pected. the sale will be continued 'this evening at 7.K
o'clock. when 1 2 0 more splendid subjects will be dis
posed of without reserve. This sale affords persons
desirous of making bpliday presents, a fine oppor-
Sunity. •

CHRISTMAS AND Tth JIIVENILES.—The
oungsters are now on the qui rive at the near ap
roach of Christmas. This is peculiarly a season of
hilarity with them. Visions of cake and sugar plums
dance through their little brains, to the forgetfulness of
everything else. We love the time-honored method of
celebrating the occasion by a sumptuous cake. We
love in memory to recall the time, when a youngster,
we sat at the old family board, and heard • the Smite
rattle through a thick coating of icing. We saw scores
of Just such cakes the other day, covered with all kinds
of devices; at the store of Lewis Buddy, No. 1400 Chest
nut street, afew doors above Broad. Dlr. B. has a gene
ral variety of cakes, ice creams, jellies, &.c., and his
prices are reasonable.
!FOOD CAILY'S OPENING OF SRA'tING
ATE. yesterday was a palpable ••hit." Their new
Skating Hat was examined, applauded, discussed, and
purchased by, we should think;Just about a thousand
of the handsomest, best dressed and most sensible
looking ladies of our city. The hat is pretty, comfor
table, andjust the thing for the Skating Park. The
article is entirely new, and the price of it moderate.
0 ELEGANT FURS FOR CHRISTMAS PRE
SENTS.—Messrs. A. K. & F. K. Womrath, No. 415 Arch
street, have even excelled their own great reputation
this season in the extent • and magnificence of their
stock of Russia Sable. Mink Sable, Chinchilla and
Royal Ermine Furs, in each of which they offer superb
sets at comparatively reasonable prices. On visiting
their !macrons lutlesrooms, a few days ago, we had
shown to as a rich mull and cape, of Russia Sable,
which hadjust been purchased by a lady customer at
the snug sum of sixteen htmdred dollars in gold, tank
ing the cost in greenbacks nearly twenty-four hundred
dollars! A number of similar sets are now in course
&completion, to order. one of the customs of this house
being, to allow their customers to select the skins they
wish, frora their stock, and give orders for their manu
facture. The extent and character of this expensive
class oi ess
furs offered by the Mrs. Womrath may be
inferred from the fact that, in addition to their own
enormous trade here, they have been obliged to supply
the principal Furriers of New York from their own
importations.
JEFFERSON DAVIS IN Towx.—We had an
interview with .Teff. Davis last edening, he having ar
rived in town by the night line from the South. Jef
ferson looked well nersonAlly, albeit woftilly shabby in
respect to dress. Re assured us confidentially that he
had come hither In the fond hope that thegovernment
would permit him to procure for himself a fall outfit at
the Brown Stone Clothing Hall of Rockhill & Wilson
No. 603 and 603 Chestnut street, above Sixth. We as:
sured Jefferson D. that it was more than he deserved;
b u t we urged, too, that because he had not acted like a
gentleman, and it was no reason why he should not be
allowed too look like one. We woke up then. We had
been, drpraning.

due his station. 'The neeessity of going to New Orleans
to avoid the cold weather is unnecesary to those who

A NEW STEAXEDAT.—The new steamboat
belonging to the Camden and Philadelphia Steamboat
Ferry Company called the Camden. is so far advanced
towards completion that it will be employed on
the ferry on Sunday next. It is larger than any ferry
boat plying between Camden and Philadelphia, and is
finished in superior style. It was constructed ander
the direction of Capt. A. B. Frazee, superintendent of
the ferry.
ATTEMPTED HIGHWAY ROBBERY.—Last
night, as a woman was passing the common near
Second and Penn streets, she was assaulted by some
villain who sprang out from a concesiment. The
screams of the female soon brought assistance, when
the scoundrel fled. He was pursued but escaped.
DISORDERLY CONDUCT.—The wholesome
chastisements which the Mayor Inflicts upon disor
derly characters for breaches of the peace, ought to
serve as a warning to that class of individuals; but.
they still continue in their wickedness. Last night
and this morning several were lined for rowdy be
havior.
TAXES.—The City Solicitor has notified
about eighty owners or reputed owners of lots in
Camden, that unless the claims against them due the
city for paving curbing, &c. are paid by the loth or
,
February neat, said lois be sold. Some of these
lots are eligibly situated, and are valuable. —roe
AMUSEMENTS.
Madame Ponisi appears this evening at the Arch In
"The School for Scandal;" afterpiece, "Turning the
Tables." At the Chestnut “A Nation's Destiny,"
which was very successful last night, will be repeated;
to-morrow afternoon a matinee will be given. At the
Walnut Brougham repeats "Dombey & Son;" after
piece "The Good For Igothing." At Assembly Build
ing Signor Blitz holds forth to-night and to-morrow
afternoon. at Concert Hall "Paradise 'Lost" will be
given this evening and to-morrow afternoon. The
Circuses are in full feather, as wit'. be seen by the ad
vertisements.
HOrSES OF GYPSUM.—In Nevada there is
a bed of pure:cr3rstalized semi-transparent
gypsum. Similar deposits have been dis
covered in the mountains of Colorado. It has
been suggested that this material be used
in the construction of houses. It is easily
dressed into shape, as it breaks readily into
regular squares, presenting smooth, polished
surfaces. The transparent qualities, where
it is perfectly crystalized, would, perhaps,
be sufficient for the admission of light, and
this renders windows unnecessary. A house
of this kind would equal in beauty and
brilliancy the fabled payee of the genii.
Some of the specimens of gypsum from
beds dissoveredin Summit county are most
beautifully variegated, and as it hardens on
exposure to;. the weather, we kndw of no
reaso why it would not make the most de
sirabl of building material."—Denver News,
