MONUMENT TO GENERAL GRANT. Majol 4 Thomas has arranged a new visit to Vicksburg in connection with Major-General McPherson, to erect a monument to General Grant, in com memoration of the siege of Vicksburg. The Monument is a.pyramid, twenty feet high, sur mounted with a fifteen-inch globe. On the principal aide is a large American eagle, with out-spread wings, which cover implements of defence; in one claw it holds the laurel, and in the other an American shield, and in its beak a pennant, inscribed : "E. Pluribus Unum." The eagle sustains on its wings the Goddess of Liberty. On one side of the monument is in scribed : "To the Memory of the Surrender of Vicksburg, by Lieutenant-General J. C. Pem berton to Major-General U. S. Grant, U. S. A., on the 4th of July, 1863." On the other side : "Site of the interview between Major- General U. S. Grant,U. S. A., and Lieutenant- General J. C. Pemberton, on the 3d of July, 1863." The monument was chiseled from the best Italian marble by the designer, Mendelin Meyer, .Ist Lieutenant, Company E, Ist Mis souri Artillery, Ist Division of the 17th Army Corps. On the space where the monument is erected stood a large tree, under whose branches the conference took place which resulted in the surrender of Vicksburg. The tree long ago disappeared, such relics as walking-canes, rings, etc., having been made from its trunk, and its roots even have been dug np to the depth of six feet. SAFETY OF Da. LIVINGSTONE.—The last foreign mail settles the question of the safety of Dr. Livingstone, the African explorer, who was reported to have been killed by the natives on the Zambesi. The British war-sloop Rapid has brought a letter from Bishop Tozer, dated at Murchison Falls (at the Luabo mouth of the Zambesi River), on the 21st of December, which states that Dr. Livingstone had come back from his expeditioh up the country, and arrived at the foot of the Murchison Felts in November, and intended to come down the river as soon as the waters rose sufficiently to get the Pioneer down. Dr. Livingstone and the Bishop and the party were well in health. The mission party also intended to leave the country, as it appeared an unsuitable field, and would return to England by the Gape. The Bishop and one of his clergymen, however, were to visit the Governor of Mozambique. These were all the• contents of the Bishop's letter. RAILROAD Accmmir.—On Saturday after noon two trains came into collision on the Lebanon Valley Branch, about four miles from Reading, smashing up cars quite promiscuously. One, a coal train, had been reversed, and ran back to very near town. This train received but alight injuries. The other was a cattle train from the West, with nearly one hundred cars. These were cut up badly. ' Since the above was in type we have been informed that the train which reached this city escaped in a most marvelous manner. The engine had been entirely deserted by the whole crew. Fortunately, Mr. W. H. Long saw the train on its approaching Fourth street, and jumped on the engine at Fifth street, and in stantly shut off the steam. But for this timely assistance damage to the amount of thousands of dollars would have resulted.—Reading Times. REMAINS OF HENRY CULY.—The remains of Henry Clay, says the Lexington (Ky.) Ob server and. Reporter, after an interment of twelve years, were removed last week, upon the death of his wife, and placed side by side with hers beneath the beautiful monument erected to his memory in the Lexington Cemetery. Connected with this event we may be permitted to allude to a single fact. The wreath of int snortelles placed upon his coffin by his friend, the gifted poetess Mrs. Ann S. Stephens, prior to the removal of the body from Washington, was found to be in an almost perfect state of preservation, being brit little faded, whilst a gold ring, bearing the initials c‘J. W.," which rested near the wreath, was as bright as though just from a jeweler's store.
