UM READING OP' THE PROCLAMATION OF
FREEDOM. A
'
W as hington correspondent of the Lancaster
E x press gives the following infer , etin . g sketch of
the great historic pictures or Liberty, to the
sigyeff • being paind-h White Francis B.
carpenter, of Brooklyn, at the House : •
It is the practice of artists wizen eugsred on
grou ps or figures to first paint the several portraits
-singly on separate canvass ; thus far Mr. Oar.
venter has already progressed. It is admitted by
all who have examined these that the likenesses
are perfect. One might Say that of Lincoln is the
st ever achieved ; that of r•tanton perfectly true
t be o life; of Chase superb; of Wells, very life-like ;
of Seward, excellent, and so on through the caM.-
/ostre of subjects and adjectives
The pictr re, in the grouping of the figures, pre-
cents the form of a double pyramid. Mr. Lincoln
- with legs and feet scattered profusely in the - fore.
ground, forms the left slope of the pyramid on the
right of the picture AL the right hand of the
;President, like Agamemnon,
" High towering o'er all the noble Greeks,"
stands. Secretary Chase, well place 4 in attitude
and mien, his arms closely folded on his bust and
form presdnting a three quarter vi,,w portrait.
Next on the right, forming the right hand - slope of
the pyramid, is Secretary Stanton, prominentty in
the foreground as the main pular and chief sup
-port of the Adminisrration; his poi trait is almost
• in profile with face turned toward the foreground
of the centre pyramid on the left. Immediately to
the left of the President, and behind the
long table at the end of which he is sitting,
is Secretary Welles, seated lower than the other
figures and forming the centre of the picture
and the junction of the two pyramids; the por
trait is full face, and the charcteriatic patriarchal
beard produces a most happy artistic effect, and
still more it is trim to fact, and appropriately
places the navy on the left hand, as the army is
the right hand support to the Administration.
Next on the left behind the table, stands Mr. Blair,
evidently in the - opposite mood from the Secretary
of the Treasury; closely to the left is Secretary
Smith in full length, painted from a photograph;
at the end of the table, sitting with arms folded on
the table, and in a most philosophic attitude, is
Attorney-General Bates. The portraits of the last
three are in three-quarter views. In front of
the table in full profile, fazing Mr. Lincoln, and
sitting before Mr. Blair, who is standing behind
the table, is Secretary Seward, with the fore-finger
of his right hand on the table, represented as in
the act of saying, •I suggest that this proclama
tion be reserved until it can be issued oa the back
of a military victory." All eyes are turned on
the speaker. Mr. Lincoln's left hand rests care=
lessly on his manuscript, and his face turned
towards the Secretary of State, presents a three
quarter view portrait.
It is the intention of the artist to complete his
work before the first of June. The painting will
doubtless be on exhibition in all, the principal
cities throughout the North and will be well
worth close study as a great achievement in Ame
rican art.
Tire KANAWHA, OIL REGION.—The excitemen
on the subject of oil in the Kanawha, West Vir
ginia, region is daily increasing. The whole
country is crowded with delegates from the North,
leases are readily sold, and engines and tubing are
constantly arriving. Hon 3. B. Blair last week
sold h - s quarter in the mammoth well to the Ber
gen Oil Company, New Jersey, for $.15, 000. Gen.
A. S. Core sold his for the same. Then, Mr.
Hendershot, the owner of the land on which the
well is situated, sold for $100,0..0, including h s
leases to a Pennsylvania Company. The mostn l f
- the supposed oil territory on the land is leased to
ether parties. —Pittsburgh. Corameretol.

AN APPEAL
TO LOYAL PENNSYLVANIANS.
The “GETTYSB1:1110 BATTLE-FIELD MIT,
MORI AL ASSOCIATION' ' was instituted for the
purpose of securing, forever, the principal points
upon the great battle-field of the war, in the exaot
condition in which they were lefrin July, ISM,
when the rebel hordes of the invader Luz were
driven back from the free soil of Pennsylvania,
and when the gall:int soldiers of GNINRAL MEADE
remained in possession of the arid which they had
won by their valor. The Association have already
secured the purchase of CEMETRRY HILL, Col.r a
HILL, Gusarrra SPUR and ROUND Tor, with the
entrenchments thrown up just npun the eye of the
great conflict which was the turning point in the
career of the rebellion. The field, with its redoubts,
wonderful stone defences, its timber breast-corks,
iteforest heights, with the trees torn by shells and
countless bullets, and its long lines of earthwork
defences, have all been preserved intact, and to se
continue to preserve them, as to be a monument
forever of the greatest of American Battle-fields,
le the object of the formation of the Association.
To enable a large numberof persons to join in thi
patriotic work, the projectors of the plan placed
the subscriptions at ten dollars each. The payment

integrity of the 'Union and the principles of Free.
dom 1 And who would not desire to hand down as
a precious heir-loom to his children the evidence
of his part in the good work, bearing, as the certi

There are no salaried officers in this Association,
nor are there any objects in view in its creation
other than thoie already stated. The grounds were
purchased from their original owners at the easc

the points selected, and the prices to be paid for
them, met the unqualified approval of a committee

easpoonful a day of the. Constitution Water will
relieve you like magic.
PHYSICIANS
Have long since given up the use of buchn, cube

CONSTITUTION WATER

We present the Constitution Water to the public
with the 4011T1CtIOD. that it has no equal in relieving
the class of diseases for which it has been found 80

STRUATION; AND MENORRIIAGLA„
Both diseases arising from a faulty secretion of
the menstrual fluid—in ease of being too little, and
accompanied by severe pain, and the other a too
profuse secretion, which will be speedily eared by
the Constitution Water.
The disease known as FALLING OF TRH
WOMB, which is the result of a relaxation of the
ligaments of that organ, and is known by a sense
of heaviness and dragging pains in the back and
sides, and at times accompanied by sharp, land-
Dating or shooting pains through the parts, will,
in all cases, be cured by this medicine.
There is another class of symptoms arising front
IRRITATION OF THE WOMB, which physi
cians call nervousness, which word covers up
much ignorance, and in nine cases out of ten the
doctor does rot really know whether the symptoms
are the disease or the disease the symptoms. We
can only enumerate them - here. I speak more
particularly of Cold Feet, Palpitation of the
Heart,. Impaired Memory, Wakefulness, Flashes
of Heat, Languor, Lassitude and Dimness at
Vision.

Dr. Wm. H. Gregg—Dear Sir: In February,
1E.61, I was afflicted with sugar diabetes, and for
five months I passed more than two g allons of
water in twenty-four hours. I was obliged to get
up as often as ten or twelve times during the night,
and in fire months I lost about fifty pounds in
weight. During the month of July, 1841, I pro
cured two bottles of Constitution 'Water, and in
two days.after using it I experienced relief, and
after taking two bottles I was entirely cured; soot
after regaining my usual good health.
Yours truly, - J. V. L. DEWITT.

Wm. H. Gregg 4ic Go.—G-ents—l freely give you
Liberty to make use of the following Certificate of
the value of Constitution Water, which I can re
commend in the highest manner:
Illy wife was attacked with pain in the
shoulders, whoie length of the back, and in her
limbs, with Paipstation of the heart and Irritative
of the Bladder. I called a. physician, who at
tended her three months, when he left her worse
than be had found her. I then employed one of
the best physicians I could find. who attended her
icr about nine months, and while she was' under
tits care, she did not suffer quite as much pain.
He finally gave her .rtio and said, her case war in
curable. "For," said he, "she Aar zeal
a cosibituitior , of complaints, that medicine given for
one operates against some whet of her difficulties."
About this time she commenced the use of the
CONSTITUTION WATER, and, to our titter astonish_
ment, almost the first close seemed to have the de
sired effect, and she kept on improving rapidly
under its - treatment, and now superintends entirely
her domestthaffairs. She has not taken any of the
CONSTITUTION WATER for about four weeks, and
we are happy to say that it has produced a_perma
nent cure. wraaa. VAN BENSCHOT.EN..
