lETLBIC . D.ATILGREN.
.A.dmiral COLONEL
Dahlgren has, in reference to th
resolutions of the members of the Dahlgrcn
Howitzer Battery in response to the late Col.
Dahlgren, addressed a letter to Mr. - Charley
Willing Hare, dated Washington, March 27th.
We regret that our space will not permit the
publicidion . of the entire letter, but we ma.‘e
room. for the subjoined extract in reference to
the lamented young hero:
Many battle-fields will bear testimony to his
selKsacrificing devotion for the country. Har
per's Ferry, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville,
Beverly Ford, ,Gettysburg and the unbroken
succession of battles for ten days from Cedar
Mountain to =Fairfax, when the Union arms ,
was foiced. back .under Pope, are his wit
'messes. - -
There were other conflicts besides, to which
his
a dventurous.spirit constantly, exposed him,
while skirting the roads and mountain passes of
.I,rorthern Virginia. -- Conspicuous among which
is the ride into Fredericksburg with a handful of
cavalry, dispersing superior numbers and cap
turing from the rebels at. least half as many, as
his own force.
Your tenarade, therefore, has not fallen short
of what you would have had of him.
The name which you' selected to designate
your Company was a graceful and most valued
Compliment to myself, now it has amore ex
alted impress, for it is consecrated by the life
and-.death of your comrade, the ever dutiful
son, the devoted patriot, the young, the
gentle, the fearless soldier, who without falter
ing gave a life of promise for a noble causj'.
May the memory of that unblemished' life
and its end,be nearest your hearts when you go
forth to do battle for a righteous cause against the
perjured traitors who have brought desolatiOn
on this fair land, consigned to untimely graves
myriads of our, south and made a dungeon and
a Golgotha of their seat of power, where so
many gallant sons of the North have been cap
tives and victims.
The accidents and necessities of my own un
settled life cast the birth of my gallant boy.
Ulric, at a rural home in Pennsylvania, not far
from Philadelphia. Bnt his parents were born
and educated in your city; his grand-parents
and those before them, even so far back as the
Colonial period of the State, Were born and
lived in Philadelphia, and their remains, with
those of his mother, brothers and sister,
repose there. His own career in life was
opening among you (in the study of the law),
under the eye of his kind and excellentuncle,
Mr. ,Tanies.W.-Paul, when the first cannon shot
at our glorious flag roused the young and old
of the land.
The hope which you express that Philadel
phia will give a monument to her son, who has
given to her cause all he had to give, limb and
it
then life—who before completing the first
year of is manhood, had been honored with
the hi rank of a Colonel, for service and
sacrifice on so many Battle-fields,—and who fell
in a desperate effort to rescue his comrades
from a captivity worse than death, though him
self just recovering from wounds that had
maimed his fair proportions,—strikes every
chord in my heart, and most gladly will I con
tribute to . the purpose from my own scanty
resources.
Will your comrades be pleased to accept my
ever grateful thanks for their feeling remem
brance of my son and their associate.
With my best wishes for the honor And suc
cess" of your company,
I am most truly theirs,
INO. A. DAHLGREN,

The United States Christian Commission has
eeiscd the present golden opportunity of rust for
the Army to extend its work for the good of the
Soldiers.
STATIONS have been multiplied, each with it,.
chapel and store tents, free writing mules, and
clothing, comforts and reading matter for gra
tuitous distribution.
VOLUNTARY DELEGATES, in numbers
greater than ever before, have been sent to preach
the Gospel at the stations and in regiments, bat
teries and camps' without Chaplains, distribute
reading matter and stores, and labor for the good
of the Soldiers.
A PERMANENT FIELD AGENCY has been
sufficiently extended to establish stations and
superintend the work.
THE BLESSING OF GOD rests sign:4ly on all
parts of the work. Many thousands have been
cheered, benefited and saved. Still a large part
of the Army remains unreached, and double the
number, both of stations and delegates, are needed
to meet the urgent demand for them.
The Christian Commission offers to the' people a
perfectly reliable and wonderfully economical
channel to reach the entire army in all its various
fields. The money given goes in full meas fire, In
benefits for body and soul, directly to the Soldiers;
and stores also, immediately from the hands of
delegates from home, who add words and deeds of
kit dness to the gifts when bestowed.
Let the people give the Money and Stores, and
the work will be donl.
The large corps of Delegates now in the field
will serve as a grand corps of relief when the
armies shall move and battles be fought, and the
greater their number the more prompt and arec- .
tire will be the relief they shall render.
Let not the present work languish. Watt not
for the cry of the wounded and dying before pro
viding relief.
Send now and send abundantly both money and
stores, and the soldiers' blessing shall be upon
you.

LAWRENCE'S METALLIC BROWN PAINT
_EE PER CENT METALLIC BASE.
The Metallic base of this Paint is composed of
the Protoxide and Peroxide of Iron. Its proper.
ties are such as to cite it superiority over all omens
in the siarket for the par - pa - se for which it is re
commended.
It has been proved by thorough exposure, and by
comparison with other paints, to be the only re
liable Paint to resist the action of salt water and
salt atmosphere.
It is therefore especially recommended for ship
bottoms, hulls, decks, boiler fronts, smoke stacks
and steam pipes. For iron railings, fences, pars,
railroad and other bridges, it is not excelled.
It ia eEpecially adapted for
METAL ROOFS.
It is not affected by acids or gases, and is a per
fect protector against rust on metals, and from
dampness on brick walls.
It mixes and blends readily with other paints,
and by comparison to the amount of surface a given
weight will cover, costs about one-half as much as
oth.r Metallic Paints.
Wherever this Paint has been used, it has given
E'STIHE SATlsrAcTioN;which is, we believe, more
than can be *mid of any other paint in the market.
