BT TU REV. EDWARD C. JONES, A. M.
SOLOMON'S DECISION.
There may be cases presented to the
w i n d and demanding adjudication, which
prove as insoluble as ambiguity can make
them. A man is called upon to pass sen
tence as to the merits or demerits of a ques
tion where on either side arguments can be
advanced and potent reasons given. In all
such cases judgment is at fault and, feels
that it is baffled. It asks divine' guidance ,
and solicits the anointing hand of Heaven.
Solomon furnishes an instance of a king
who, at the outset of his government, had
a reali7ing sense of the limited range of his
unassisted judgment, and the stern neces
sity for its due enlightenment. Favored
with a vision, the Almighty asks him to
prefer the choicest aspiration of his bosom.
Youthful as he was, he asked at once for a
discerning heart, to the exclusion of the
dowry of wealth or the noble guerdon of
power. And never was a wish more fully
and completely satisfied. An occasion was
soon furnished when he was summoned to
the arbitration of a. point so knotty as to
remind one of the riddle of the Sphynx.
• Two Jewish females come before him, each
advancing a . claim to the maternal owner
ship of the little bud of humanity, whose
infant cries resounded through the lofty
passages of the court. The most forward
of the two enters upon a clamorous state
ment. As a wordy plaintiff would do, she
assured the king that the defendant and
herself were lodgers in a common apart
ment, and that the former had overlaid her
own infant in the night, and clandestinely
abstracting her living child had left in its
place a lifeless little form. But where are
your witnesses to ratify the truth of sb
strange a charge? Who can certify that
such an abstraction was made ? It will be
a terrific thing if the throbbing bosom of
love should be deprived of its legitimate
possession and lose, by the strategem of a
designing rival, the casket of its fondest
hopes. The defendant repels the charge as
calumnious. She retorts upon the other
the crime .of abstraction. She says that
her's is the living child, and the dead one
her accuser's. Thus one allegation is met
and counterpoised by another, and the
scale is balanced. Not a hair's breadth
does the beam vary from its horizontal po
sition. Ne corroborating witness; no in
validating testimony strengthens or
weakens the plea of either party. Earn
estness and frankness are visible on the
side of each. Each seems to be endued
with lively sensibility for the contested
prize, the little babe, which cannot belong
to both, but which both vociferously claim.
How often do we wish that an infant would
speak, Never was there a case where its
declarations were more needed. It is ob
vious that charge and counter-charge may
be advanced forever and yet no judgment
based upon certainty issue from that ivory
throne of the Eastern king. But just at this
point Jehovah is true to his promise made
to Solomon in the visions of the night. The
eyesalve is applied to his mental orbs by
that august and Eternal Judge, who dis
criminates at a glance the merits and de
merits of every case, and places truth and
falsehood each upon its proper basis, and
laying righteousness to the plummet, as
signs to every moral question its eternal
measurement. .As if struck by a sudden
thought the king demands a sword. May
not sudden decisions after long vacillations
of purpose be looked upon frequently as
God's hand adjusting our will. This pur
pose may be to threaten with condign pun
ishment the -female who has tainted her
heart in the perjury, and then when the
acknowledgment. of guilt is rendered, he
will spare the shrinking culprit, and restore
to its legitimate possessor the little disputed
prize. Not so, for he was about to institute
a test as infallible in the sentient world as
is that of the chemist in the material, when;
by some alkali he- detects'the pres'ence of
poison in the solution held in the, cup before
him. "Divide the child and bestow a half
on each." Such was the singular decision;
but it solved the vexed question at once and
forever.. The true mother, stirred to the
inmost depths of anguished sensibility,
cries out as if the barbed arrow had found
the tenderest and most - vulnerable part. -
"‘Give her the babe and slay it not;" while
the deceiver, as if anxious to consummate
by revenge what envy had begun, persists
in the enforcement of the royal judgment.
- But the sword had decided otherwise. The
sword had brought out - the true parent. it
had given the clue to the labyrinth. It,
had peacefully arbitrated,' and the - arbitra
tion was solemn and ccmclusive. She would.
father iold her blossom with all the dei'f

of maternal love upon it, to the sordid keep
ing of one who would, doubtless,.soon crush
by harshness its expanding beauties. She
would transfer the gem to one who in
coming time might cast it off as a mere un
polished pebble, when once it had sub
served her necessary purposes. She whose
uplifted arms` and wild expression. , startled
the very courtiers from their indifference,
and brought from even manhood's eyes a
gush of sympathizing tears. She was, she
must be the mother of the child. The voice
of untrammeled nature had uttered its de
cision from the heart, and with the dear
blossom folded to her soul, and receiving it
from the grave as by ,a magic resurrection.
she bore it hack to . its undisputed nest of
love, while Solonion . must have praised his
God for a judgment whose decision, vindi
cated as correct by every person present on
that doubly thrilling occasion, and endorsed
by the crest-fallen and guilty countenance
of the crafty, but now fully detected plain
tiff, had elevated him in the • estimation of
his subjects as a discerner of. spirits and
brought a revenue of joy to the otherwise
blighted and despairing heart.
