CHAS. HENRY SHOOK
Quench the burning indignation,'
Check the rising tear;
B« his sepulchre the Nation,
And tho Land his bier!
Hellish vengeance hath consigned him
To a grave unknown:
Freedom’s angel hath enehrined him
By her altar-stone. '
Curse-and mangle, O ye Traitors !
What is left of him:
Crash and. sever, Knthless Haters !
Every y outhi ul limb;
Hide him in yonr dark morasses,
r That no verdant sod
E’er may tell, to him who passes,
Where he rests with God.
Bot ye cannot crush the story
. Of his hero-worth,
Nor debase his wealth of glory
With ignoble earth.
And ye cannot bide the gleaming
Of his hero-name,
For it kindles with each beaming
Of his Country’s fam#! •
Spiritofthe son immortal!
Wailings of the sire !
Peace, lot in yonr Nation’s p.rtal
Hangs the funeral lyre ;
Breathing there the mighty chorus '
Of the young and brave,
How he died, a while belore ns,
Liberty to save!
Oh ! be this the consolation,
This the mourners’ pride,
That the story fires the Nation,
Bow he lived and died !
Be'the sepulchre that holds him,
Hidden as it may:
T’ is his Country that enfolds him
With her native clay !

14.—An accioeut occurred to the mail train on the
Change and Alexandria Kailroad this alternoon.
about two miles north of Brandy Station, caused
by the giving way of a brake on a freight car,
■which threw three cars from the track, c impletely
demtfishing one of them, and badly demolishing
the others. 1 here were some horses in the car
which was destroyed, bnt they escaped with slight
brnises. The mail car was thrown down a slight
embankment, making a complete somersault, and
throwing the mail carriers and others in the car
nto a pile from the front to the back part, bnt
falling, iortnnately, on a heap of newspapers and
mail tags, jfhcy were saved from serious injury
Several soldiers were more or less injured S
D. Houghtedlin, of the 20th New York, one of the
guard on the train, was badly wounded in the
hand; James W. Marsh, slightly; J. a. Crampt,
slightly; John Matthews, slightly, all of the 3d
Inoiana flavalry, and W. Bahn, of the 4th New
YoTk Cavalry, severely; also, Littlefield, in the
hand.
A negro named Dennis Paxe, belonging to the
Commissary Department, was standing on the
platform and was instantly killed by falling be
tween the cars, his head being severed from his
body.
The train at the time was going at rather a slow
rate of speed,* otherwise the consequence would
hare been more serious.
An accident occurred on Saturday to a freight
train near the same place, caused by a hand-car
being left on the track, and the engineer running
into it. Some cars were thrown from the track
and half a dozen soldiers injured.
General Mtade returned to the army to-dav His
health appears to be and the reports in
regard his resigning aie said to be without
foundation.
A member of the 93d New York regimen t, named
Chappel, was arrested to-day for uttering disloval
sentiments, and will be tried bv court-martial.

Cairo, March 14.—Some particulars of tne late

strongly fortified. The Osage in advancing was
allowed to pass withent interruption. The flav-

upon her, which after a time obliged her to retire
in a damaged condition, with a loss of two men
