    SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN—M&SS MEETING OF
GEB MANS.
The German citizens held a mass meeting on
Saturday evening at the Mechanics Hall, rela
tive to the Schleswig-Holstein difficulty, i Mr.
J. Kohler presided. .
Mr. Harry Dittman, one of the speakers,
explained the present position of affairs in the
two Duchies,, and referring to the history of
Schleswig-Holstein, he urged that the sympi
thies of the people of the United States should
be with the Germans, aud not with the
Danes, who had for years been endeavoring to
deprive the people of the two Duchies of every
thing that could remind them of their nation
ality.. Danish preachers and Danish school
masters had been sent to Schleswig-Holstein in
order to subvert the German language. The
people were not allowed to hear the gospel in
their native tongue, aud there were other in
dignities offered the-people who submitted pa
tiently, waiting until such time when, under
the agreement with Denmark, the connection
would end. Their Constitution was disregarded,
or, as the Minister of the late Frederick said
“The Constitution should be written upon the
backs of the Schleswig-Holsteinersin stripes.”
The union with .Denmark was explained. In
1448,'the royal line of Denmark became extinct,
and the Danish Diet tendered the crown to the
then reigning Duke of Schleswig-Holstein. He
declined, but recommended his brother-in-law,
who. was accepted, and who became King
Christian I. He proved to be a wise and good
ruler, and in 1460 the people of the two Duchies
proposed that he - should become Duke of
Schleswig-Holstein,as well as King of Denmark.
This proposition was acceded to. The tender
was coupled with certain conditions: Ist. That
the two Duchies should retain their sovereignty.
2d. That the two Duchies should not be sepa
rated-from each other, and 3d. That the agree
ment should continue so long only as there'were
lineal male descendants of Christian I. Under
subsequent Kings, the people of the two
Duchies had ample cause to' regret the union,
but-.they were determined to observe the con-.
tract. With Frederick VII. who died in 1848,
they allege that the male line of Christian I.be
camg. extinct, and the compact was absolved.
But the Great-Powers who framed the London
Treaty of 1852 and established the new succes
sion for the crown of Denmark, ignored the
contract with' the two Duchies, and hence the
present struggle in behalf of the Duke of An
gustenburg, who is the legal ruler of Schleswig-
Holstein, the people of the two Duchies having
elected him, as they had a perfect right to do.
The speaker continued at length, referring
to the ignorance displayed in the United States
htrreference to the dispute, all the facts being
copied Dorn the Tory press of England. He
wondered at the allegation that the sympathies
of the people of this country should be with
Denmark, as the weaker power, after our own
experience during the present rebellion.
Tho following resolutions were passed:
IVhereas, The present war in Schleswig, bath in
its origin and purpose, is not rightly understood
by the Anglo-American press; and
TFAc-eo*, It is the duty of American citizens of
German birth and descent, who are fully compe
tent to judge of the merits of the question involv
ed in that war, to correct the erroneous views of
their native American fellow-citizens; therefore,
be it j
Eesolved, 1. Thatu/the two Duchies—Schleswig
and .Holstein—the State-sovereignty and even the
language of the people (the German) had baen ar
bitrarily au£ipi)e Sß ed by the Danish Government
ana the Danish people for-years past.
2. That thjp arbitrary rule can only be put to an
end by a total separation of said ‘Dncbies from
Denmark, and by- the restoration of their oid time
honored (400 years old) common Constitution,
which has been set aside by the Danes, without
the authority of law, and despite the protestations
•of the inhabitants of tho said Duchies in order to
merge them in the Danish monarchy.
3 - That the London Treaty of 1352, which disre
garded the State;-sovereignty oi the Duchies, and
their old Constitution; is null and void, r on the
principles of both municipal and international
law, inasmuch as it is an interference on the part
of the so-called great Powers of Europe with the
domestic affairs of the German Confederation
whereoi Holstein is a member, and of the two
4. That-we German Americans therefore feel and
express the warmest and unalterable sympathy for
Schleswig-Holstein and their cause, and-that we
hope that, notwithstanding the intermeddling, of
the so-called great powe. s and the dynastic in
tngnes of some of the German princes, the present
■war will lead to the independence of the Duchies
and to their deliverance from. Danish bondage..
sth and lastly. That we are convinced that onr
English-speaking fellow-citizens, as citizens of a
lree country, will share our sympathy with an
oppressed people, if they come to understand that
they have heretofore been misled by the British
press, and that the war in Schleswig is a straggle
for the re-establisbment of the inseparably united
?f U +h lie f Schleswig-Holstein—the original seat
of the Anglo-Saxons—-and their deliverance from
Danish oppression.
