PATRICK^ Washington, March s.— The Republican jmblishes the following : We are permitted to pnblish the following despatch, received this morning, by the Presi dent, from Maj.-Gen. Butler, covering another despatch from Geh. Kilpatrick: Headquabteb's, Fortress Monroe, March 4. —To the President: I forward the annexed ac count from Gen. Kilpatrick; Yobktown, March 4.— General: Col. Dahl gren was directed to make a reconnoissance with £OO men on the James river. He attacked at 4 o’clock 1 P. M., on Tuesday evening, and drove the enemy in on Richmond. The main attack having failed, Col.Dahlgren attempted to rejoin me near the Meadow Bridge. He and Col. Cooke were with the advance guard. Some fifty men became separated from his main force, since which nothing has been heard from him.' The main force reached me with slight loss. I have hopes he may yet come in. (Signed) J. Kilpatrick, Brig.-Gen. Commanding the Expedition. In addition, a rebel deserter informed one of my aids that a one-legged Colonel and about one hundred men were taken prisoners. I shall hear by flag of truce on Sunday night and will telegraph again. (Signed) Benj. F. Butler, Major-General Commanding. IMPORTANT FROM NORTH. CARO LINA. New York, March s. —The following letter has been received from Newbem: . . Newbebn, N. C., Feb. 29.—The body of Capt. Westervelt, of the late gunboat Under writer, has been found in the river, with abnilet through his head, which confirms the report that he resisted to the last. The firemen, together with all the citizens from 18 to 60, years of age, are under orders to be ready at a moment’s notice to meet the enemy, who are said to be massing a large force for a final attempt to repossess Newbem, Ply mouth and Washington. The attack will be of the most formidable character, and may take place at any moment. The report that a large fleet of gunboats were on the way here, accom panied with reinforcements for our army, has encouraged all with the belief that with this aid we can resist successfully any efforts the enemy may make to capture these important points. Th(s Newbem Times says: We are informed the rebel general in command at Kinston has hung several members of the 2d North Carolina regimenti(white), captufed by him in the re cent movement upon Newbem. The same paper says'that an army of 60,000 Union sol diers marching to the heart of North Carolina, giving assurance of protection from Confederate vengeance, would ensure the political conquest of the State. Viewed simply in a military light, an army of 60,000 men here could effeet al* the Army of the Potomac has been three years attempting to accomplish. We could take and hold both the grand lines of railroad communi cation through this State, by which the rebel army in Virginia is replenished, and could cut off his supplies from the south and southwest, and Lee must evacuate Virginia or starve. GEN. SHEEHAN’S MOVEMENTS. New Yoke, March s. — The Tribune contains the following from Washington: A despatch from Memphis, March 1, received here this evening, gives some new and interest ing details of Sherman’s movements. The despatch says that after having reached Meridian, Sherman sent out scouts to feel the ground and to ascertain whether Logan, who had started from Florence to meet him, and Smith and Grierson; on whose cavalry he re lied to prosecute his march on Selma, were advancing. Three days elapsed before he received any answer. But as his army had but a limited nnmber of rations, he, by Vt pld “ oTement wh ich disconcerted the rebels, suddenly turned toward Aberdeen and Columbus in the richest part of Eastern Missis ; mppi, where his army was snre to find an abun dance of provisions. By this movement he turned his back upon Selma and Mobile marched toward Logan, who had already ad vanced to meet him, and, by an audacious stroke of strategy, placed himself at a distance of about one hundred miles from Johnston’s flank, now menaced by his advance. The despatch says that the rumor spread concerning the attack upon Mobile and Selma by Sherman was simply meant to divert public attention from the real object of the expedition, which aims at an invasion of Georgia some where between Trenton and Lafayette- Washington, March 6.—Up to noon to-day the Government has not received any recent official information in relation to General Sherman. GENJfEADE IN WASHINGTON Washington, March 6. Yesterday' after noon, according to. a city paper, Gen. Meade was in consultation for an hour or two with the Secretary of War. The notorious guerilla Richardson and several others were captured yesterday by a scout sent out from the forces of General Hobson on the Cumberland river. DECISION OF THE COURT OF CLAIMS. Wasbixgton, March s.— The United States Court of Claims, Judge Loring only dissenting, has given an opinion in the case of Wm. S. Grant vs. the United States, being a claim brought against the Government for the reco-. very of certain property destroyed by United States troops in the territory of Oregon, in July 1861, in order to prevent said property from falling into the hands of the insurgents. Under these circumstances the Court holds the claimant as entitled to just compensation for private property taken for public use, and they have accordingly adjudged the claimant to receive $41,500 from the United States, to be paid in due course of law, Congress having first to make the appropriation.
