New-York, March I. —The Tribune’s Wash ington letter of the 29th states that the latest information from the Army is up to 10 o’clock on Monday morning. No battle had occurred between the opposing infantry forces. There was some skirmishing on the right on Sunday, but nothing of any account. It is evident that Lee don’t intend to fight unless compelled by Meade to do so. Stirring news may be ex pected, perhaps to-morrow. , IMPORTANT FROM THE PACIFIC. , New Voek, March I.—A special despatch to tho World says: . Highly important news has reachedthe Navy Department from our Pacific squadron, to the effect that during the latter part of January two French frigates entered the’port of Aca pulco, Mexico, coaling station for San Francisco and Panama steamers, and proceeded to overhaul things generally, threatening to bombard the town if resistance was offered. They examined all the American vessels in port and caused much consternation among other neutrals. The affair is regarded as a very strange, if not high-handed, proceeding, and may lead to considerable trouble. Panama advices of the, 18th, are as follows: No news from Mexico. The French frigate D’Assas is keeping strict blockade at Acapulco. She has seized a quantity of contraband of war. The United States frigate Lancaster, together with the Saginajv and Farallones, are still at Acapulco. Admiral Bell will leave for Panama as soon as the French Admiral, who left here in the Pallas, shall have arrived at that port. The French will then take possession of the town, as is expected, without any resistance on the part of the Juarez Government. The latter has mounted guns in the fort, but only for the propose of keeping the mob down. FBOH WASHINGTON. Yester day the case of Williain MoEwen and Michael -F. Costello, convicted of an assault and battery John R. Ecke. In passing sentence the Judge said: I have given to this case the consideration which it demands. The evidence establishes the fact that a number of persons assembled at or near the office of a newspaper establishment in this city, and when the prosecutor made his appearance three of the number made an attack upon him. Of these three, «ne is identified . po sitively ; the other was undoubtedly npon the spot, though it is by no means certain that he joined in the attack: There is no evidence before me proving that the persons assembled near this office did eo for the purpose of attacking the individual or individuals engaged In the printing office; but rather to express their dis approbation of the conduct of certain persdns who were there engaged at work. Had it ap peared that these defendants acted in concert with others and at their instigation for the per pose of attacking the prosecutor, nothing wonld EaveJ them lrom a punishment which would be as severe as it wonld be just. In disposing of this case, it seems to me that onr duty will re quire ns to express our decided disapprobation of that course of conduct uponthe part of a number ol men which led to this assault, and eo to pnnlsh, these defendants, that, while we shall be merciful' (perhaps too much so), we will also vindicate the law. As this is the first case of the kind which qae occmred, ptrhfipa the necessity for an example does not exist; nevertheless, we Ahall im pose a punishment, which will, I hope, act as a warning, not only to these defendants, bat to .all who snppose they can intimidate others or trifle wi.h the taw, either as individuals or while acting in concert, and whether the object in view is a i® expression or uisapprebation or leads to an which, although not an aggravated One,- ® rt “ e less, an assanlt and battery.
