EVENING BULLETIN
SATU EDA f, FEBHUAfty 27, 1861.'
THE HEW CAMPAIGN.
The sad news of a repulse of our troops in
Florida can scarcely surprise those who have
coolly calculated the chances of General Sey
mours success- A force of a few thousand
men was sentintp the interior of the State, and
when sixty miles &om its base at Jacksonville,
sasmet by & superior force of the enemy and
tiriven tecL witli iieavy loss, to JacksonriUe.
The rebels had long notice of the approach of
onr troops, and abundant means of conveying
an army by railroad to meet them, of which, of
course, they availed themselves. Thus, we
fear, an enterprise, undertaken unwisely and
with inadequate means, has been brought to a
mortifying termination. Who is responsible
for this disaster ? Was it ordered by General
Gillmore on his own responsibility? Or was
it part of a general plan of campaign ar
ranged by General Ualleck? Whoever au
thorized it, it has proved.to he a lamentable
blunder, and It should bo fixed upon the right
man.
TWb first failure in our spring campaign

A SLIDING SCALE OF DEMOCRACY.
Modern Democracy has an extraordinary fa
cility in adapting itself to circumstances. It
mtkes mistakes, and very serious ones, too;
but it generally manages to correct the blunder,
or at all events to slip out of its consequences.
The party did a pretty keen thing in 1844,
when it put Mr. Polk on d Free Trade platform
in the South, and proclaimed him to be “ abet
ter tariif man than Henry Clay 33 in the manu
facturing States, and the revenue bill of 1846
was the result of the little trick. Modern De
mocracy has lately found out that Slavery
is in a bad way, that it is bad stock to
speculate upon, and the leading Copper
head newspaper oracles of New York
are out against the “peculiar institution. 33
They hold that the Democratic party was
never the advocate of, or the apologist for sla
very; that it always understood and appre
ciated its great evils; but that the said De
mocracy went upon the principle of minding
its own business and of not meddling with the
affairs of States in which it had no concern.
This may be true of New York Democracy*
(although we doubt it); but what a position it
places Pennsylvania Democracy in. It must
be borne in mind that the party in this State
selected for its. banner bearer a man who had
publicly declared that was an incal
culable blessing, 33 and by way of special en
dorsement of this sentiment, the speech con
taining it, was published by the party as an
electioneering document. Has Democracy
ceased to be the catholic principle it used to
be ? and has has it one set of views for Penn
sylvania and another for New York ?
ZERO—ALMOST.
A gentleman has just arrived in New York
city with fourteen thousand dollars of Southern
money, in bills of five dollars to ono hundred
dollars, issued by the “Mississippi and Ala
bama Railroad Company, 33 and other corpora
tions. All this money, which formed a pack
age two inches thick, tied together with a “shoe
thread, 33 was exchanged a short time since, by
a reformed rebel, for a five dollar greenback,
and the “reb., 33 who was inside our lines,
thought he was a lucky man to obtain so much.
It will not be long before every Confederate
bond and note will come to this complexion,
not only in the North, but even at Richmond
and Montgomery. There is, however,. one
consolation in store for the “powers 33 that is
sued them, and that is that one hundred years
hence their value as relics will double or treble,
and future antiquarians will gloat over them in
the way that the present unfortunate holders
do not feast their eyes upon them.
OUR CONGRESSMEN AND LEAGUE ISLAND.
Some very unjust allegations have been
made concerning the course of the Philadel
phia delegation in Congress in reference to the
League Island Nary Yard project. We have
had repeated proof that they have labored with
zeal and ability for the interests of Philadel
phia, and we believe that their labors will be
successful. In the meantime, we call attention
to the report of the debate on Thursday in re
ference to the appropriation for the purchase
of an addition to the present Navy Yard, re
commended Naval Committee. The
appropriation was carried; but Mr. O’Neill,
with much ability, maintained that.it was not
to interfere with the League Island projected
Messrs. Kelley and Randall sustained him, as
did several members from other States.
