When Paul was awaiting ftt Athens the arrival of his two, companions, Silas and Timotheus, he rambled through the classic city of Athens, denominated so beautifully “the eye of Greece.” With a taste re fined by ment'al .culture, every object must have charmed him, which exhibited the skill of the artificer. Temples, whose ar chitectural proportions were the most per fect, captivated his visipn; statuary and painting, the most ideal, attracted his ardent gaze and music, whose harmony in upon his senses, made him fancy that he was indeed a denizen in an enchantpd region. : But to contemplate a country with a classical, is far different from re garding it with a Christian eye. A region* which is redolent of natural and artistic beauty, may be sadly deficient in high moral excellence—its atmosphere may be pure in one sense, but laden with pestilent miasma, in another aspect: and so it was in the present instance. The city was not partially idolatrous, -but wholly given to idolatry. And as Paul contemplated its marblp glories, his spirit' was stirred within him to 1 witness its alienation, its entire and unequivocal alienation from God and truth. And when he stood upon the Hill of Marsj in the : full audience of the most learned assemblage ever convened in a <nven time and place, he took occasion to preach to them of the Unknown uodj of whose glorious attributes they were so lamentably ignorant. He told them that’the great . Deity, emanations of whose mind they were, was not to be depicted by the handicraft of the artisan in golden or silver figures, the mere designings of piously enthusiastic men. He assured th Tu th , at ., m ® od they lived, and moved, and had their being, and that it was a prostitution .of their sonship thus to grovel m animal delights, forgetful of their noble destination, and regardless of the stringent claims of one who merited their love. What a lofty appeal thus went out from that Hill of Mars ! What a glowing vindication of -truth m the very face of those who in skep -I{’™ indifference denominated him the babbler, and turning loatliingly away from the banquet he had spread for their famished souls. When Jesus and the resurrection were announced by the Apostle, esteeming him a setter forth’ of strange gods, they heaped obloquy on his head, and sought their homes. But rarely does the Almighty fcaje Itself without a witness,. whin a faithful sermon is delivered by a sincere servant of his Son. One amid that band of hoaiy sages was arrested in his high-toned skepticism, and mduced to abandon cold phdosophy for the warm and enlivening e w ~C ?HV an ethics ‘ ‘ The cr °ss upon ihe Hill of Mars won to itself a noble trophy. Dionysius—the isage—the philo „!ri be Ar , eo P° ait e— was convicted, on verted, saved. And a lowly woman who gathered amid the throng, and perhaps was overlooked in the imperious conclave— a humble female kept close by the side of Paul, and owned the mastery of his appeal, and gave her heart to God. Within sight p, e . of Minerva, and the statue they both repudiated a system “terwoveq with their being, and took up the cross to bear it through evil and through good report.
