I think you would have spared Part a lifetime to have shared All the swelling thought that then Met those swarthy battle-men 1 Rank nor tinsel went not there: Girt ■vyith grime and all threadbare, Each accoutrement and dress Bore the battle’s rough impress : Yet that march of martial pride Monarelis might nave knelt beside: Hearts beat quick,- and every eye Glistened as the boys went by: For each iron face and form, Bronzed and bent by many a storm, Spoke to all its conscious glory : t Back we bring the Flag in-glory! * * Quickly as the multitude! Proudly borne, that banner viewed, Jesu! what a shout was there Binging on the wintry air; Prided by the smoke and flame, Yet it bore no blot oi shame : Tattered by the shot and shell, Grandly did its tatters tell How its bearers fought and fell! How tbe wind’s triumphant bre i h. Bore it on the storm of death: Ho w fall many a martyr’s eye . Saw its flashing folds go by.
