EDWARD C. JONES, A. K. THE WIDOW’S SON—A BIBLICAL . SKETCH.; . (From St. Luke, Chapter 7th.) How affecting was the scene exhibited to the vision of the Saviour as he drew nigh to the' gates of Nain. A funeral*. pageant slowly and solemnly emerges from that open gate, and she who bends in speechless woe by the sable bier, is a widow, and the deceased her only son. What an ascending scale of incidents is thus presented ! The dead man was young—he was the son of a loving parent—he was her only son—and she was a widow- What wonder then that the sympathies of Emmanuel were at once enlisted in her behalf. The wail of suffer ing possessed a magiietic. influence on the heart of Him who is so feelingly portrayed by an apostle as being “touched with our infirmities.” . His compassion prompted him to touch the bier, as just before it had induced him to solicit that' grief-strickcn female to restrain the current of‘ woe. That simple touch was at once accompanied by a resuscitating influence. There was om nipotence in that simple action, accompa nied as it was by the sublime injunction which must. have-startled, by its very suddenness, the train of mourners— “ Young man, I say unto thee,' arise.” Instantaneous was the fulfilment of that sovereign mandate. He rose, and gazed with wildness at the scene about him. His last recollections were of a painful dis temper, and a fierce struggle with the fell destroyer, and a farewell glance, and an icy coldness at his young heart. Now he wakes as from a troubled dream—he views the garniture of the sky and earth—inhales the air, and feels the life-blood bounding through its channels, while on him beams a mother’s eye, radiant with tenderness, while suffused with tears of joy. How magic the transformation ! Gplgotha putting on the vesture of Eden; life blossoming from the very dust and ashes of mortality; joy the most ecstatic treading on the very heels of anguish the most profound ! The evangelist beautifully says—“ And he (Christ) de livered him to his mother.” One would, have supposed that our Lord might have requested the young man thus restored to life to accompany Him as an attendant upon His journeyings, that thus he might be exhibitejd to all the world, as a sigjial instance of omnipotent love. It would have heightened the effect of the Saviour’s teach ings, and considerably augmented His per sonal importance, to have had a standing retinue of those whom he had restored to health and vigor- But, no; our Saviour did not enjoin such a sacrifiee at the hands of those who felt and owiied his wonder working : agency. He would not have them to sunder the sweet links which bound them to affectionate relations and a sunny hearth-stone. His unvarying requisition was, “Go home unto thy friends, and tell them how great things have been done unto thee.” This is one of the most'captivating elements in our'Lord’s character—his sacri ciifice of personal aggrandisement, It was conspicuous at; every point of bis pilgrim age. Emphatically might it be said of Him that he‘sought not his own glory. “He delivered him to his mother.” What a beautiful instance of the total renunciation of self-interest! As though he ; had said— “ Young man, I wish to have no claim upon you for this display of Godhead, further than the simple gratitude which your heart must own. Return to your mother’s house; it, is desolate no longer now. Cheer it by your constant smile, enliven it by your cheerful presence; forget not that your mother is a widow, She needs your sym pathies and aid, and let her freely and'un grudgingly possess' them. Go back, train of mourners, and shout for joy, and lay aside those sable habiliments of woe. Go back, enlivened mother! a star has suddenly broke in upon your gloom; a flower sud? denly dispossessed the thorn of its cruel place. Walk in the radiance of that star; breathe the perfume of that flower; and for get not, in future life, the humble wayfarer who proved himself to be, at the gates of Nain, the Resurrection and the Life.” That widowed mother, we may presume, could not find words to express her gratitude. But must she not have knelt by the side of that blessed deliverer, and murmured out those heartfelt syllables—Jesus of Naza reth, I worship thee; Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the King of Israel. It has also recently Opened a Free Military School at its headquarters, 1230 Chestnut Street, under the care of J«.hn H. Taggart, late Colonel ©t the 12th regiment Pennsylvania Reserves and' has at this time 2GI scholars. All ihe students thathave been sent before the Examiners at Wash ington have parsed and are now officer* of Colored h egiments. Two additional Preceptors have been engaged foV the Scto.d ,yiz: au Assistant io teach Tactics and Army Regulations, and a professor to review ihe students in. arithmetic and the higher mathematics, geograohy and history. The Committee having neirly exhausted the funds entrusted to it, and believing its power to recruit colored troops economically is by no means at an end, has asked and received permission from the'>War'Department to continue its work. It therefore solicits from citizens, and from the Banks, Insurance Companies, Railroad Compa nies ard other public institution* renewed aid. The Committee feels confident that it is only necessary to call public attention to this matter to insure its full accomplishment.
