The second race was for a purse of $1,000
dasb of five mile, for all horses, $G0O to 1st;
9300 to 2d; aod $100 to 3d borse. There
were live entries. John Morrisey and Ed
Eilis were tbe only starters. Morrisey was
tbe favorite. Tbe struggle was a game one
Ellis took tbe lead and mode tbe Grst mile
in 2:35 and two miles in 5:10, leading by
three lengths at the hall rallo pole in tbe
tb mile. Morriescy had cow closed up
ana passed Ellis, leading a neck, lie com
pleted , the three miles, in 7 :04 '.
Running tbe fourth mile Morrieey increased
bis lead to six lengths. At the quarter pole
on tbe Glib mile Morrinscy had opened a gap
of twenty lengths and seemed to have the
race, but Ellis gradually closed up and tbe
two horses entered tbe home stretch about
two lengths apart. Ellis rapidly gained and
when within forty yards of tbe score Morris
sey broke down and quit entirely. Ellis went
by, winning the race; time 13:49

Advices from the Prussian front to 10
o'clock Wednesday night, stalo the French
are falling back to tbe line of the Morrelle,
barrassed by the Prussian cavalry, which
bad already passed Saar Union, Falquoe
mont and Les Etangs. Stores of all kinds
and railway trains had fallen into tbe bands
of tbe Prussians. Tboy bad also taken tbe
small fortress of Ilut.elsteln, in Vosges,
which the French bad evacuated, leaving
guns and provisions.
The Journal Official bas advices from
Melz to 4 :30 yesterdsy. Details of tbe bat
tle of Froscboroiler are still meagre. Mar
shal McMabon bad a horso killed tinder
him. A brigade of Cavalry of the reserve
and one division of tbe corps of Gen. Failly
arrived on tbe field at the elose of tbe day
and covered tbe retreat- Tbe pursuit of
thd enemy was vigorous at firit but
soon became a mere reconnoisance.
McMahon after being 25 hours in the saddle
passed Sunday at Saverne, which was
abandoned on Sunday night, and occupied
by tbe Prussian'. Some of their advance
pickets en me up witb our rear guard, but
were driven back without much difficulty.
Tbe Journal says: Up to one o'clock
tbis morning no attack has been made on
our left wing. Our forces arrived at Sar-
