Highway llobbery iu Flttiole.
On i:utnrday a farmer by the numo ot
Cotton, who resides near Pithole, visited
that place to make his usual purchases.
AVhilo so doing lie formed the acquaintance
of a man nnined Griflin, who to show his
friendship for Ctton, borrowed a dollar
from him. at the same tlino observing that
Cotton bad soma ten. dollar bills in his
pockot book. Cotton, after imbibing con
siderable nlcobo!, and orjoyitig soma ot
the innocent pleasures of Pithole, stinted
for home about 9 o'clock p. ru., followed by
Griffin, who bad no difficulty in keeping up
with Cotton's team. Upon reaching within
about a mile of home, Cottou was di
ugreeably surprised by some ouo jumping
into the rear cf his wagon and seizing him
by the shoulder with one hr.nd, wMlu with
the other ho abstracted his pocket book,
containing two ten dollar greenback?, be
sides some "postul'' currency. Cjtton Im
mediately dropped the reins, and a LnsUct
nl eggs that he was carrying, and "put"
lor his BFsailant, but ou account of the
brush or 'benzine," his legs became "tangl
ed'' and the robber escaped for the time
being. Nothing daunted by his fall, as
soon as he could disentangle his legs,Cotton
started to Pithole determiued to have his
money or "wring"' GrifSn's neck, who the
bright moonlight had enabled Cotton to sin
was the man. Applying to Justice Keonan
fora warrant, it was immediately ifsued,al
tbough lato at night, and placed in the
bands of Constable Austin for execution.
Passing down Ilolu.den stieet, looking lor
"his man," Austin met Councilman George
Thompson, who, upon being informed of
the business in band, joined the officer, and
assisted In the arrest of Griffin, who was
found quietly enjoying bis supper at a res
taurant, having made somewhat better time
than Cotton iu returning to Pithole. Alter
being placed in the lock tip by Austin end
Thompson, Griffin was perfectly willing to
be searched, throwing open his pockets and
declaring that all the money he bad in his
possession was somo crip amounting to
about three dollars, but the experience ol
Austin and Thompson was too much f r
hiui. After closely examining his pockets,
and finding nothing but scrip, Auajio ijuio'.;
ly removed Griffin's bat, un passing Lis.
fingers around under the lining, the two
tens were exhumed aud the lobber stood re
vealed. The prompt and efficient action o1
Austin bud convicted him. Had he waited
till morning before acting he would have pro
bably lost a "lliinduhker" fui some years,
as the money would have been u!;anged,anU
