Belvidere, III., Jan. 1. I am enabled to
send yo ibis morning a detailed and accu
rate account of tbe teirlbl case of trichina:
spiralis now exisliog In th town of Hamp
shire, Kan County, about eighteen miles
southeast of Ibis city. Various statements
bar been published lu relation thereto,
nearly all of which contain error.
Tbo f irm oa which these cases originated
Is owned by M. S. Molony, Ecq., whore-
sides, the greater part of the time, in New
York City. Mr. O. Vf. Downs, of this place
bas charge of various pieces ol property be
longing to Molony, among them tbla Kane
county farm. Mr. Downs has bean absent
lor a week at Ibis frlgbtlul suffering, engag
ed li attending to tbe wants of tbe afflicted
people as for as possible, aud return last
evening. From him I learn what follows:
Tbe lamlly living on Molony'a farm as

turned In a sow to fat, the animal being one
and a half years old,and which had dropped
a litter of pig In th eumtner. She was
killed about tbreo weeks ago, and was in
fair condition, neither poor nor fat, and ap
parently baalthy. A part of tbe animal
was cut into hams, and a portion made into
Bologna sausages.
The family began eating the meat, and
gave aomn to the neighbors, . all using it
without cookiog. In tbreo or four days
several members of tbe family were taken
sick. Dr. Mesisk, ofMarensn. was called.
I) at ftor a lew days, as bo was at a loss to
determine tbe character ot tbe disease, Or.
Green, of tbe same town, was employed,
who Immediately pronounced it trichina).
In two week ten persons bad been seized
with tbe malady. . Four bava died, five
cannot potwlbly live, aud one bas but the
faintest show of recovery.
After tbe death of a young woman, Dr.
Green dissected a piece of flesh from ber
tblgb, and also obtained piece of meat
identical with that eaten, and took the
parls to Eigio, wber they were placed un
der a magnifying glass with an enlarged
power of six hundred times, and subjected to
a searcaisg examination. Tbe parasites
were discovered In Inniimerabla quantities.
It is estimated that they existed to tho nam.
oer ci a minion (T) to tbo cubic inch. As
seen under a glass ttev mrjcar to ho n

Tbo pationt suffers fuBrful agony. Thy

est manner their sufferings are intense
Their eye are glassy and protruding, and
mouths parched.
Eev;ral physicians from Elgin, Marengo,
and Sycamore, have visited Ibe dying victims.
Tbe attending pbysiUn, Dr. Gra an ex
perienced and able practiiloner.says tbere is
uoasjertaioe l method of treating tricblne,
and tbat whatever is done must be of a
nature wholly experimental. Ho has littla
bofc of succoring these under his caie, but
may be able to arrive at results which wit'
benefit liituro sufferers.
The trichina) are taken into the stomach
with tbe food In a dormant condition. In
about three days thereafter, biilnir vitalized,
they are found to have made their way into
th mascles of the patient's body. Tbere
they commence ibe work of deslruction
and continue It until tbe muscles are con
sumed. They broed and die every three
days, nd multiply by thousands. Tbe
only time when the patient ia free from pain
is during tbe hour when this change is
taking place. Tbe duration of lbs sufferer's
life is to be measured only by bis capacity
for endurance, being usually from three
days to a week.
