"PuBRtPAV's Ridb." A corrcspondant or
the Commercial given the following account
of thu origin of Tliomtin Riicbanaa Road's
poem of '-Sheridan Ride:"'
Tho idea of the subject of this poem grew
out of a wood engraving after a desixn ol
tbe artist, Tboraan Naat, which appeared
in Harper's Weekly In 18i5. James E.
Mnrdoob, Eaq , observing the engtavlng at
a news stand iu tblfl cllv, purcbascd tbe
puier cor.taining It, and took it to hie
friend, T. Ilticlicman Uend, tho puet, and
siigcsted Id him that it wna a iaud euLjecl
for a poem, and, in his cnrnput nnd enthun
nslic maoner, urged hia Irii'nd to work up
the idoas; lo which Mr. Read replied in
his characteristic manner, 'Yon ta.lt to me
alioiit writing a poean nn though it were as
easy us to go into Spraguo's store ani order
a new coat.'
This was only a duy or two hebio. tho
grand ovation which was given in tjis city
in 13(15 in honor of Mr. Murdoch. Mr. Read
said no more about it at that time. How
ever, on tho morning of tbu very day on
which tbe ovation took place, ho withdrew
himself to bis room, and, In an incredibly
short space of limn, produced this celebrat
ed poem in our estimation tbo greatest ol
all his works. Tho poem was given to
Mr. Murdoch, to le read by him that nieht.
Those of our citizens who had the good foi
tunc lo be resent in Tike's Opera Illisoon
that occasiun will never foreet t! wild
whirlwind of cnthusiusm with wbl Jh this
poem was received. Tbe patriotic feelings
of the audience were wrought up by this
poem, an rendered by Mr. Murdoch In bis
more than usually etfective manner, to a
point of enthusiasm raroly produced by the
mere recital of a poem or drama. '
