BEAUTIi rL THCI GUTfl,
Are these bj Mrs Morrison, ot Indianapo
lis, Iodiann, in a New Year's address for
the Evening Mirror of that oity:
"Tne world moves on and the years must
die. :'
Hut each to the eartb tn leaving
Benttenths more smiles than lenrs or sijrhfl,
Iiinio cause for bleasini; than for itrievinir.
Then smile un the ye.r Unit's newly doad;
And hall! to the one taat s uuwntni;,
For hoaren and earth are n'-ater wed
On every New Year's morning.
So the years po by, and the world moves on.
Moves lorward and not retreating;
And that grund millenial year shall dawn
Sometime, lo give us greeting;
When lives shall be much more than creeds,
And worth weigh more than station
When wealth ehu'l he prized much Icbs than
deeds.
And self-love be abnegation."'
After the battle of Springfield Missouri,
a regiment of Missouri troops weie ordeied
to exchange their shot guns fur the musUets
captured from the Yankees. One long, lank
backwonilsman was specially obdurate, but
at length consented to obey orders and ex
cept the "single barrel." But nothing
could induce him to take the bayonet: "It's
bothersome to tote and I can't see the good
ev it." Col. P. explained the use of it, and
tried to prevail on Jhe obstinate man to keep
it. lie took the musket, stuck on the bayo
net and jobbing' away experimentally,
drawled out: "Well' Colonel, ef it's oredrs,
I 'spose I'se 'blegod' to kerry the Htiekln
thhifr. i lint all theu Y'ankees is Dtttch and
it ono of them DuAb kits close enough to
stick me with on ov tbein things, if be
