An Explosion In the Commonwealth Bank —8400,000 Destroyed, 5 * Beool • 10 50 800 ;. 00 15 00 00 18 00 About five o'clock yesterday afternoon, an explosion occurred in the Commonwealth Bank, located at the corner of Fourth and Chestnut streets. The noise made by the explosion was considerable, people came rushing tato the streete from the 110:ening offices and from the restaurant beneath. Officer Hill, who was standing on the corner at the time rushed to witness the scene of destruction. He found a terrified director mending on the floor in the centre of the bank, The officer at once act About. to eat:anal', the cause of the terrific blow up, and ascertained that the aforesaid director had placed a large package containing the sum of four hundred thousand dollars in bank notes into the stove, where a roaring tire was raging, and closed the door—the notes wore of the old lisue, and canceltedand in a few mo menta the crash came, owing, it is supposed, to an' over inflation of wor th less currency. The top of the stove, on which there mason earthen weed:filled with water, was hurled violently upwards„ striking the ceillag obliquely, break ing it into a number of plecea. This was the only derange done, apparently, the building not being injured in the least. The director soon became reconciled and resumed hie duties. Eitrottentog the itletbselppl River. A resident OtMemphishas addressed the Gov ernor of /dlssissippl, recommending to his at tention a scheme Mr shortening the Mississippi 'river. The proposition la to lessen the distance between Cairo and New Orleans 800 miles, or to redncejt Rolm 1,000 to 900 miles, The effect 'would be to increase the current onelourth or to eve, for high water, a =rent of sena miles per hour in piece of three. A part of this scheme is to dam up the Red river near Itainne lion with the 2disassiPPl, so as to throw the waters which seek an outlet through Rod river late the Atchafalaya and Berwick's intY. Not to damage the commerce of New Orleans an Iron lock Is to bo Paced In the dam so este let boats Into and out of the Mississippi through Bed riv er. Another part of the pima contemplates that all the cratlete, both natural and artilicbsl, from near the mont h of Red river, on the west bank of the Mississippi river, to Mae Bluff. Arkansas, could -be opened, small streams straightened, and their banks leveed, thus opening a system of drainage through a country embracing the best pdrtlon of Arkansas, at the same time, with these positive outlets, drawing large quan tities avatar-Thom the Mississippi, never to re turn.—St. Lolls Republican. Is the evil of not being allowed to ill-treat a negro The best enlntlon of present difficulties may, .perhaps, be found in the adoption of the fol lowing rule which will place all parties on an eqtutl footing, and yet Bare the State from the evils we deprecate Abolish, as to future trans actions, the rule permitting parties, and Inter ested p, mons to testify, and execute all negroes from testifying. Already great progress has been made In cheep milling in some parts of the United States, But a short time ago a-Vermont farmer carried off the prises from a great German exhibition, his sheep being, by great odds. the finest to be found In the collec tion brought together from the whole of Eu rope. Every farmer who has tried one upon sandy roads or fields speaks highly in their favor. and they are equally Valuable upon softnoll when it , iswet, like muck upion the great prairies, where their fellows cut thsough the sod and sink half a foot below ; the surface. Upon some meadows wheels with four-inch tire run freely, while these with the ordinary width of ly. inches cannot be used at all. Upon more than half the land and - roads of the United States a wide tire-wagon will run easier, heavily loaded with two horses, than a ruutrow tire with three.
